Honestly, as someone who has never really enjoyed working out – it’s not about motivation or drive – it’s about routine. You have to have some motivation in the The Good Father Shirt it is in the first place but early days – but eventually, you don’t exercise because you want to – you exercise because it’s just what you do. It’s also why it’s so easy to fall off the wagon. As soon as you start missing a few days, it becomes just as hard to start again. My body doesn’t like hard training but walking 3-4 kms has helped me lose 60 lbs and greatly improve my cardio vascular fitness. I go through waves of once a week all the way up to 6-7 days a week. I think the key is setting very manageable goals. Don’t make it a binary “I’m being healthy” or “I’m being unhealthy”. If you’re dreading 1 hour start with 20 min. If you’re dreading the diet, start by cutting something small. There’s a tendency, when we set goals that we don’t end up hitting, to think of the whole effort as a failure; to dread getting back into it because you already feel like a failure. This is not the way.

I don’t. I play hockey and I ride a fixed gear bike, and I’m addicted to both. Love it. I’m so into it, I don’t want to eat bad so I perform better. I don’t count calories though, but I don’t really need to. If I start gaining weight I cut out aweets, etc. You have to find stuff you find fun. My strength training is more limited to pushups, pullups, and woodcutting with my axe. I also believe in “the The Good Father Shirt it is in the first place but gym of life”. I bike to a nearby convenience store to buy milk. If I drive somewhere, I park at the back of the lot and walk in. Funny that this actually saves me time instead of finding the “best” parking space. Walk my dogs whenever it’s nice out and carry the heavy stuff. Doing all this has helped me develop discipline. Sometimes I’m feeling lazy and don’t want to bike ride or cut wood, but I do it anyway and I’m always happy I did.
