Another adult in every class whether that’s a para (or two!) or another teacher. So much easier to teach when I don’t have to constantly stop my lessons to deal with behavior issues. If I could just continue teaching while another teacher/para pulled a misbehaving kid aside or into the hallway or just sat next to them for a few minutes that would be wonderful. These are the first things I’d do but of course there are 20 other suggestions I have, these are just the ones that would help the most IMO.

I’m not a current teacher, but I remember growing up and it being teacher always right, unfortunately when I taught in a charter school almost two decades ago, it had already transferred to the parents making excuses and blaming child and therefore teacher always wrong. Seems there needs to be a happy medium, as teachers are not always right, but patents need to learn their kids can and are a**holes at times.

Jesus, my school would never allow a class of 3 kids. If you get under 25 regardless of subject they threaten to cut it unless you get numbers up. I had 3 classes of 25 that they reduced to 2 classes of 37 this year. I have 17 this year in a public school and it’s a dream come true compared to the 22 that I had last year. My hardest class has 7 kids. My biggest class of 16 is my best class. Numbers don’t mean much when you have 4 chuckleheads in a class of 7. My girls are in first grade (twins) one has 15 and the other 16 in the class. One class is perfect and the other CHAOS just because of the mix of personalities (3 boys who will never be in class together again, in this district, our admin plans the classes very very carefully) those boys were me and my best friend in school…we were in 2nd grade together, and the school must’ve said “never again”…they must’ve forgotten, ’cause they slipped up and put us in the same 6th grade class if it helps, he’s now a doctor, and I went from the armed forces and into teaching, so there’s hope for some of us naughty boys
16 for me would have been heaven!!! I had over 30 in every class, and over 30% of those had letters & numbers attached (special needs of one kind or another), and no paras; no ELA help; nothing. I spent a majority of my time on classroom management. Very little time for actual teaching in circumstances like that. So I’d say going back to letter grades in elementary would help a lot.

Level 3 is a big pile of mush. A student could improve performance significantly and still get a 3. There’s no motivation. We just implemented the 1-4 system for grades 4-9, whereas it was just used for primary level previously. I loathe it. The criteria for level 4 is essentially what would’ve been considered an A+, and 3 is everything from C+ to A. I’ve gotten away so far with using terms like “bridging into level 3” and “performing strongly/confidently at level 3,” but it’s so unclear for parents. Heh. Wasn’t that “study” looking at outcomes in classes of like 50 in Pakistan and Kenya? Like sure, class size makes no difference when every kid there knows their family is paying out the ass to give them an education and they’ll get booted if they act up or flunk out. You can absolutely teach effectively to very large classes when the class is composed entirely of children who are willing to behave and learn.
