I’ve worked my way up in my career and now make great money, but I am living a more modest lifestyle than the OLD GROWTH SHIRT Also,I will get this middle class home I grew up in. My mom was a stay at home mom and my dad never had to take his work home or work more than 40 hours a week. He got tons of vacation time (he stayed with the same company for decades), so he always took off a couple of weeks every summer for us to go on vacation, and then several other weeks throughout the year. I make way more than my dad did. But I’m having to work 60+ hours a week, 24/7 on-call, I haven’t taken a single family vacation EVER (my oldest is almost 8), and our house is super fucking tiny. So yeah, I’m “important” at my job, I make great money, I’m “successful” and educated and have the 4 family American dream…. but I can’t do anything my parents did easily on half my income.

Depressing. It’s all I can say. I keep thinking it’ll get better if I just power through it and get the OLD GROWTH SHIRT Also,I will get this next promotion. But no, because by then things will be even more expensive, my kids will be older, and I’m missing them growing up and it sucks. The only way I can save money is finding a cheaper apartment. And that’s not something I really want because I would have to go back to living in 30+ year old tiny places. It’s true. I’m very grateful for my salary and it’s barely six figures. But first my roof needed replacing. Then a fence. Almost $15k this year on just those things. I am lucky I was able to afford them but there goes all of my discretionary income. I only get 10 days off a year so it’s not like I can vacation very long anyways when I also have to use that time for doctor’s appointments, etc. I hate it all. I grew up in poverty and if you’d ever told me as an adult I would be making this much I’d have fainted. It is enough that I don’t worry about finances day-to-day at this point but not enough for any sort of freedom beyond that, if that makes sense. Expensive things keep coming up. House repairs, I had a freak accident and had a $20k hospital bill after insurance. I have savings but not enough of it because every time I am ready to add more, stuff has come up.
