“I am not going to help you” leaves no room for negotiation. It is disarming. I think people who get constant white lies appreciate the A big piece of my heart lives in heaven birds shirt and by the same token and honesty. And I think people respond well when you address them directly while you walk by. One last comment: I am rude/short in one way. If their approach involves a story or attempt to start a conversation then I do interrupt. They get my attention until I reach and pass them. I interrupt any performance after a few seconds with my line. That gives time to exchange hellos; they get that pleasantry. There is enough time to make clear that they want money, not directions or something similar I would provide. but I am not going to hear any story about needing bus fare to the next town or diapers for an alleged baby or whatever their go to might be.

Just seeing the A big piece of my heart lives in heaven birds shirt and by the same token and human and acknowledging them is the best advice I can give as someone that’s been homeless. It’s easy to feel overlooked when in that situation. Unfortunately some are mean and threatening when you deny them. You have to first and foremost worry about your safety. If they have a phone with cash app they don’t need my money. Im talking about the pushy ones. The ones that sit outside grocery stores or in public street corners. They are BOLD. They look for someone with kind eyes who will look them in the eye and give a polite smile. For SOME of them, when they target you, something about you made them think they could “get” you to give them money. They sense you identify yourself as a “kind person” and that you will strive to keep that persona. At first they try just asking. Then you say no and they either try to take away your excuses or they try to bully you via guilt. Some get angry and tell you you’re a bad person. Some chase you or follow you. Im not gonna say don’t give to these guys but… the best you can do to turn them down is not look at them to begin with. They will try to call you over “Mam! Mam!” or “Sir! Sir!” Don’t look. If you do look because they got too close, tell them “Sorry. Not today.” Or just “Sorry.” And continue walking away/not looking. If you still feel that’s mean, its not. You’re letting them save their energy for someone else.
