People will hate on me for this, but aggressive homeless people have used up all of my empathy in the I Love Someone With Autism Heart shirt it is in the first place but past few years. I used to compile donations from the community and carry non-cash items to hand out – meal vouchers, hand warmers, new clean socks/underwear/gloves/hats. Ready made feminine hygiene packs in ziplocks. Wet wipes. Easy to eat, packaged food like energy bars. It was fine for awhile, and then a shift happened where people started getting aggressive that I wasn’t giving cash. I’ve had liquor bottles, used syringes, rocks, random other things thrown at me, people have spit at me and called me names. Thrown the donations I am offering in my face or on the ground. Men have threatened to rape me, women have threatened to kill me. All because I didn’t/wouldn’t give cash.

So yeah. Now I’m all done and my empathy is gone. So I walk on by and leave them to their fate, and let some other person who still has empathy deal with it. I don’t understand why people feel the I Love Someone With Autism Heart shirt it is in the first place but need to throw out little white lies to navigate this situation. I am always honest and direct: I have been using this line for 30 years. Both sentences are very direct and very honest. I say it pleasantly with a smile. I try to make eye contact unless their first line is aggressive. I do not change my pace; keep moving. I have never had a negative reaction that I felt was based on my response. Two or 3 times people have called me names for not giving, but pretty sure in those cases negativity were coming no matter what. Hundreds of times the conversation ended immediately and we both moved on.
