My look is such they they usually don’t approach me in the Juneteenth Breaking Every Chain Since 1865 Heartbeat lgbt shirt moreover I will buy this first place, but if they do, this always works. Don’t engage them, don’t address them again, just keep walking. If I have a little extra time or a little extra money, I offer to help with what I can. If I’m not able to help, I just say “I’m sorry I can’t right now”. These people have no resources: no transportation, no family they can ask for help, no money, no possessions of value, no credit, etc. I made a list of nearby things they can do, places they can go, and people they can contact to get some assistance and I give them a copy of that list too. Offer to buy them a meal of their choice if there’s an eatery nearby. If not, then they’re most likely using money for other pursuits

Most homeless are mentally ill and many are drug addicted. They need medical care and all that non-professionals can offer is their concern — it is heartfelt, but it does more to alleviate guilt than help the Juneteenth Breaking Every Chain Since 1865 Heartbeat lgbt shirt moreover I will buy this homeless person. If you want to help, volunteer. Food pantries and outreach groups exist and would love for you to lend a hand. The homeless problem is, to a large extent, a problem of organization. People leaving the care of hospitals and rehabs don’t always have the kind of coordinated care that is needed and end up relying on family and friends who cannot manage. Giving them some change feels good because it is generous, but it actually makes the situation worse. Personally I like to feel like I’m helping others, even if it’s just a hero complex. But I can’t treat everyone. So I gauge out what these people are like, what they’re saying to each other etc and try to reward behavior I agree with. One man complimented my hair when I was experimenting with it in ways most men would side-eye like shaving it off, dying hearts in it. Plus he always maintains eye contact with me and is respectful and listens to what I have to say in conversation. I enjoyed him enjoying my weird hair, and his efforts in treating me humanely as well, so I reward that with warm food and a beer. Better than all the pricks out there who make women either feel bad for looking one way, or feel objectified by looking another. This homeless man treats me 100x better than most entitled people I work with as a nurse, and he is struggling just as much as they are. Sometimes the best people end up at the bottom on society.
