I usually look them dead in their eyes and say no. Most of them are drug addicts and you’re promoting the Juneteenth Men Proud Dope Black Father Strong Blessed shirt and I will buy this drug abuse by giving them more money for drugs or alcohol. What if that last dollar is the last dollar they need to get their next fix and it happens to be their last? Plus their are so many programs to get free food, stop by any church and they’ll either help you out or direct you where to go. We already pay taxes to provide countless programs and instead of taking advantage of them I’m gonna give them money for drugs and alcohol, no fucking way. I get that not all homeless people are addicts but just saying that sounds stupid because the majority of them are. What youre safe to say or do sort of depends on whether youre a man or woman but in general very firmly and without eye contact say sorry I don’t have anything. Don’t be hostile but don’t be polite either. If you show any weakness many will absolutely pounce on that. Im a bigger guy so if im not on my way to work ill offer to buy them bottled water and granola bars or something. They are more than welcome to come in with me to chat but I pick the store and load them up in or just outside the front doors of the store.

Ignoring them is also probably the Juneteenth Men Proud Dope Black Father Strong Blessed shirt and I will buy this safer option though and dont feel bad if it’s the route you need to take hell you can always volunteer any spare time at a food bank. Again move fast but with purpose dont appear timid or otherwise an easy target. A few months ago my girlfriend was walking a clients dog and when she politely told a homeless guy she didn’t have any money he threatened to rape her and chased her to her car. Luckily she was near the clients house, he heard her screaming amd chased him off with a bat. “I’m sorry – I don’t have any cash to give”, but look them in the eye when you say that. Acknowledge their humanity & don’t ignore people*. *if someone is harassing you or making you feel unsafe, then ignore them or loudly say “go away” and immediately move somewhere populated, preferably indoors I’m sensitive to homelessness, but I had a downtown job where I’d literally get asked 10 times every time I’d go to and from my office. Ignoring that I can’t afford to help everyone, it got to be a real time sink.
