I just say “No I don’t have change or smokes.” Haven’t carried change or cash on me in years and I quit smoking 8 years ago. I just say “no”. I have mixed feelings about this. As someone who was once homeless and begged for money, I know it’s rough out there. I don’t say sorry, because I’m not. I don’t give excuses, because it doesn’t help anyone. Sometimes I throw in a “Good luck”, and that’s genuine. Most cities offer local government services for homeless people willing to do the Just a girl who loves sunflowers shirt and I love this work to get off the streets. They have to go to rehab if they have addictions. They are offered job training classes to complete. Etc.. You don’t always need to give money you could give food or water and if you don’t want to at all then just keep walking unless someone speaks to you specifically then you could say ” I only have enough for the stuff I just bought.” Or bills due today. Some of these comments are hella rude which is unnecessary don’t need to be a dick just because you have one.

I’ve only been personally encountered by some homeless people and I tell them I don’t carry cash but if they are hungry I’ll take them and get them food. One gal took me up on it so we went to Taco Bell (her choice) and I got her some extras. I see homeless people and panhandlers almost daily because they are on many corners in our city. But often times the Just a girl who loves sunflowers shirt and I love this panhandlers aren’t homeless. I ignore them. Because I was mugged once by a homeless person after I declined. I feel if I say I don’t have any cash that reduces that risk. If you want to support people experiencing homelessness in meaningful ways but aren’t able or don’t feel comfortable giving money directly, here are a few suggestions: 1) Offer to buy them food. 2) Carry pre-packaged snacks. 3) Carry supplies that many people experiencing homelessness or poverty need, such as socks, undergarments, hand warmers, sanitary supplies, toothbrushes and toothpaste, etc. You can make little packages to offer when someone requests money. 4) If you’re in an area with food trucks and takeout restaurants, purchasing some gift cards thar you can hand out when someone asks for a meal. 6) In some regions, coffee shops have programs where someone can pre-purchase a coffee or a sandwich, and hungry people who need a meal can go and ask if there is anything available. See if a local café can do something like that.
