Can’t have the Whisper words of wisdom let it be daisy dragonfly shirt and by the same token and pay raise yet? They can give you the pay raise bc they just freed up plenty of salary for it. I’d ask why you can’t get the raise and make note of the bs answer. You could be a bit snarky and ask how long they want you to perform this role for a discount. I don’t necessarily recommend that but you could phrase it much better. You probably actually have more leverage than you realize. If you don’t accept their terms they have a role they have to fill with an external or internal person. External hires will get the full benefits. The internal person will probably get the same deal offered to you. And I hate this part and I recently had this conversation with my manager about our new performance program. They are holding you to a higher standard than they are a new hire. You have to prove you can do the job by doing the job. A new hire will get the benefit of the doubt and full benefits of the position.

The best investment for the Whisper words of wisdom let it be daisy dragonfly shirt and by the same token and company is probably for you to take the job. The shitty part is that they are trying to take advantage of you. There needs to be a firm date for that pay increase. No “feeling it out for when the time is right” – if you are managing this team successfully enough for them to keep you in that position, then you deserve the pay. Maybe a month. And not a month to meet, assess, and kick the can down the road – one month and the pay is yours, or they find another manager. And frankly that’s being generous to them. That’s a month of discounted labor they’re getting. If they think you’re right for the job, enough to put you in that position of responsibility, then you should be right for the compensation of that job. This is a trap. Make you work for free for a chance to prove yourself, all the while looking for external hire with matching experience. There is a chance you will be stellar and change their mind, but honestly who wants to be taken advantage of for a chance. Greedy company.
