About five years ago I worked at a company that did this exact same thing. We agreed for a six month trial time, and a half time and final feedback meeting. at the end as both sides were comfortable I got the position, the pay raise and a new title. There are 2 routes to getting rewarded for doing this – you either get your current company to pay market for the new role (not likely) or you take the title and aggressively shop your resume around with that new title such that you can get paid somewhere else.

Because if there’s any ambiguity they absolutely can and will continue to string you along without a raise or title change as long as they can.
