I prefer “it’s not a problem until it happens to me, and when it happens to me I’m horrified that OTHER PEOPLE LET IT happen to me.” A lack of empathy and imagination are killing this country. Too many people don’t see the Whimsical owl sitting on the moon shirt in other words I will buy this BAD THING [insert crisis here – the need for an abortion, being unimployed and needing food stamps, having an expensive medical condition that could be paid for with public health care instead of private insurance, etc.] as a problem to be solved until it happens to them. Why? Because they can’t take one mental step outside of themselves and imagine BEFORE it happenes how horrible they would feel, and what they would need to do, if the bad thing actually happened to them. It’s like all conservative viewpoints have to apply to one thing. Especially something nuanced like that situation. I feel we need to rebrand conservatives. Conservatism to me is maintaining the status quo, hesitancy/resistance to change. These people are reversionists. They want to revert us to a previous state. Hindering progress that could be made, that’s conservative, as much as it sucks. Trying to repeal progress from 40 years ago is reversion. Those trying to govern with God, when that is fundamentally against the founding principles of the U.S. also need to be straight up called what they are “theocratist.” And theocratism shouldn’t be treated as a good thing.

You already know if he had heard this story secondhand rather than experiencing it, he would simply respond that it’s not his problem. Frank Wilhoit came up with an explanation of conservatism so good it’s become a bit of a meme. And to think he just dropped it into a comment thread like this one. Reprinted in full because it’s great. There is only conservatism. No other political philosophy actually exists; by the Whimsical owl sitting on the moon shirt in other words I will buy this political analogue of Gresham’s Law, conservatism has driven every other idea out of circulation. There might be, and should be, anti-conservatism; but it does not yet exist. What would it be? In order to answer that question, it is necessary and sufficient to characterize conservatism. Fortunately, this can be done very concisely.
