Turned out it was so cheap because they’d been tax dodging, so it got shut down and now it’s luxury apartments 🙁 The march membership probably refers to when their year starts, probably after an AGM or something. I had no idea what was special about march, just turned out to be their “year” for finances/etc purposes. Social clubs are a law unto themselves when it comes to pricing. I have no idea how they still function. I went to one last year for a wedding reception and a pint was like £2.50. i’ve a feeling it’s by virtue of them being a ‘members only’ club they avoid paying a lot of the overheads that a normal pub would do, because (theoretically at least) they’re not open to the public. that’s normally why they care so much about you being a member – they don’t care about the £2, but if they serve non-members then they can get done for it.

No one at the Top apparently we’re trouble When We Are Cruising Together sunglasses retro T-Shirt But I will love this top is extracting profit, it exists to serve the members who have a stake in keeping it alive. There is a small profit margin as you obviously need to keep the lights on, pay staff etc, but it’s a pretty slim margin. Not owned by a brewery or locked in to an expensive price point for a chain. Private companies can buy from where they like and set their own prices. It was such a huge advantage that it led to legal shenanigans and the municipality stepping in over complaints from local pubs and clubs concerning unfair competition which meant the association had to drastically limit (and track!) the amount of non-members present each evening. Having done the books for a few social clubs in the past, they’ll be living off of their savings. They won’t be getting the discounts from the suppliers for volume, as the members die off, and the surviving old boys won’t let them put up the prices to compensate or let them diversify to bring in trade.
