A lot of these places are always looking for new members. It’s those, exact, power trippy old twats who have pretty much killed social clubs. They’ll be gone in a decade or two. I think they were always there, it’s just younger generations (by which I mean everyone younger than an old-ish Boomer) just don’t have time for that bullshit. Haha yep. My local club committee is packed with people like this. Fuckers who LOVE rules. Thankfully the cheap decent pints and snooker more than make up for it. All committees are full of them, they attract people like that. Years ago the landlord of the pub asked me if I’d like to help him set up a live music club with a few other people to put a decent band on every month. It went brilliantly for a year or two and then the inevitable committee types started joining and in the end the whole thing fell apart with people going on about rules and whether the committee could vote because it wasn’t quorate and all that bollocks. I said I’d never join another committee. Like, I’ve only been asked once since (in 30 years maybe) but I said no quite firmly) My local social club was begging on the local Facebook group for money and advertising it’s events complaining they’ve been unable to sell any tickets.

Was told they only take so many new members once a year, I have to apply only in January and in any case, they’re at capacity. I can see how it’d make sense in the days every man in town was a member and paper records would have made it trick to keep up with dues. Just seems absurd nowadays though The one by us you can’t join unless your referred to my two existing members, great guess I’m not joining then, I have no clue who’s members and who’s not You’ll have to wait outside until you see some members, like the kids who wait outside the corner shops asking for people to buy them fags Nothing unusual and perfectly justified for the elite clubs like the Savill Club in London (at approx £1600/year!), but for a grotty ‘working man’s club’ this is laughable. It’ll be too many legacy members who a) don’t want it to be busier, and b) refuse to increase the membership fee. I can imagine the AGM every single year – the treasurer delivers a report stating they are verging on bankruptcy, then the membership votes down any price increases to mitigate this. Then everyone grumbles when it shuts. All the pubs near me are 6-7£ a pint, the social club is 3.50 max so if you like a pint and snooker then that £2 is worth it for sure One near me used to be £2 a pint and everybody used to book the place for weddings, funerals, birthdays etc because the bar was so cheap.
