That said (playing devil’s advocate), we’ve always bitched and moaned about stuff we didn’t need to learn in school. How much of even this basic stuff kids will need for the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt in addition I really love this workforce is questionable. I’ve been working for nearly three decades, and am currently in a rut, working a low-level job assisting people making much more than I do. The stuff that makes me “smart,” all that stuff I learned in college and beyond, is purely optional now. Lots of people in management didn’t even go to college, they just need to know the industry itself (and it helps to be a schmoozer.) It can get awfully boring and depressing. For most jobs, it likely won’t matter, as long as they’re able to test people who absolutely need to use math/reasoning skills. Your last two bullet points about research and computers are SO IMPORTANT. I teach university students. They cannot do research. They cannot use google.

this reminds me of a girl in my class… she saw a picture of the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt but in fact I love this mediterranean sea and asked if it was the pacific ocean. she also thought that the caspian sea was lake michigan and that vietnam was in the middle east. ‘m not a teacher, and I’m not American (which I presume OP and most of you are), but how come you aren’t just failing the kids who don’t meet the requirements to pass a grade? How old do you have to be to create a Reddit account? I’d like to see this post from a student’s point of view, evaluating teachers. Hey, I felt called out by that last one. Sure I type using mostly my index fingers but I also type near 100 wpm that way. I’ve got blazing fast index fingers. The fastest fingers in the West.
I know that my district has students in grades three, four, and five who are unable to write their own names. Of those who “can” write their names, most cannot write their own names legibly. By and large, the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt but in fact I love this children are illiterate. We all see children arrive in kindergarten or first grade without knowing the alphabet or how to count to ten. I’ve known children this young who do not even know their own names. I’ve seen shit that makes me think another mass extinction event wouldn’t be so bad. On a very real level, where does it stop? Do we just keep toeing the line of a failing education system forever? We need systemic federal changes, so no state can become the next Florida. If this goes on for another 20 years we are fucked. Of it goes on for another 40 years, we’ll be too dumb to know how fucked we. the gap between the “gifted/honors” population and the “general” population has widened significantly. Either you have students that perform exceptionally well or you have students coming into class grade levels behind

My daughter is a freshman and has expressed an interest in being a teacher. Recently she says she wants to be an accelerated honors math teacher “Do the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this work or get out” My third graders don’t know their vowel sounds. They don’t capitalize or punctuate when they write. They don’t know that every syllable has a vowel. They don’t understand subtraction within 20 or Know partners of 10. They can’t name another state outside of ours and are equally likely to name our state as a country. They don’t know the months of the year. They don’t know how to tie their shoes. They lack SO many skills. I teach 12-14 year olds pre-Algebra and Algebra I, unfortunately everything you mentioned completely checks out. I’m 10 years into this profession and it’s harder than it’s ever been. It sucks and I hate my job. To my students, “researching” is googling and picking the result that the Google assistant tells them. “What was your source?” they say “Google” 🥲 we have since gone over proper researching and I’m still having some do that
TBF I had a teacher friend, I can’t remember the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this grade 4th or 5th maybe, who couldn’t do most of those math examples either. How can we expect the kids to do this stuff if their teachers can’t do it either? As someone who has no experience teaching whatsoever, do you guys think this is unique to the current generation of students or has this always been a thing and then inflated on social media? I met a 9th grader about 2 years ago who couldn’t tie his own shoes. And he got frustrated with me and with himself when I tried to show him and he couldn’t do it right away. I hear you, but even as a parent it’s a nightmare to overcome. My wife and I spend a lot of time and money making sure our kids are up-to-speed. It shouldn’t take being wealthy and able to afford tutoring and home resources to make sure kids are up to speed.
They also are completely behind with basic fine motor skills for art. I have many middle and high school students who couldn’t tie a simple square or overhand knot, even after I demonstrated it several times. Can’t draw lightly. Can’t copy a line or recognize changes in value. Can’t dulpicate a pattern. Can’t push a book awl through 4 sheets of paper (they all said their hands were too sweaty…like what?) Forget using a god damn ruler…even as just a straight edge to draw a line. I struggle more and more to try to get decent work from them – especially drawing realistically or from observation. I catch them drawing like dog shit and not even looking at the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this reference image or still life despite reiterating 1000 times that this is observational drawing. They say “this is hard for me”…well no shit things are hard when you don’t ever try, practice, or pay attention when I’m trying to demonstrate this to you. They have the attention span of a flea and then try to hand it to me like a toddler asking for me to do it for them.
My 16 year old junior in High School didn’t know how to sign a check because he was never taught cursive or his signature. MANY of the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this 7th and 8th graders where I work don’t know how to tell time, tie shoes, don’t know their addresses, any important phone numbers, grammar or punctuation, etc etc etc. If they can’t Google it, they don’t know it. The issues raised in this post are deeply troubling, underscoring longstanding problems in deaf education that remain unaddressed by the public. It’s inconceivable that some parents don’t prioritize accessible language for their children, depriving them of fundamental communication tools. This neglect can lead to irreversible educational and developmental delays. Too often, we encounter students who are the neglected products of cochlear implant programs and have a poor grasp of a first language (L1). It’s unfair that educators are then blamed for not reversing the consequences of this neglect.
For those teachers facing similar struggles, I believe that if the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this students possess a solid L1, they can still progress, provided they are active participants in their education. If not, the situation becomes significantly more challenging. I teach AP classes. I have students taking AP Seminar that don’t know keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste and thus they have to try to do it with the Chromebook track pad, so they complain when I tell them to copy and paste. I have AP Human Geo students that can’t figure out any visual data beyond bar graphs and pie charts. Nearly none of them know how to search a web page for a word. The kids that try to pass off chat gpt don’t know that they should read the text to make sure that it doesn’t tell me to do further research to double check their findings.
I have multiple 8th grade NC social studies students unaware that they live in N.C. or where the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this Atlantic Ocean is. On the note of not being able to type properly, I struggle with that, even though I never grew up as an iPad kid. It’s just a lot faster for me to type using my index fingers, and it probably has something to do with me being autistic as well, so I wouldn’t immediately suggest that not being able to type the proper way, as being a sign of being behind. I just got home from a STEAM night at my elementary school where I argued with a 3rd grader about how his last name is spelled on something he made to have cut out with our laser cutter. The real kicker….his aunt that brought him didn’t know how to spell it either. I had to show him my list to convince him I was right. Math II teacher here. I asked my students what 1 divided by 1 was. Several shouted “0”, others shouted “2” and most reached for a calculator.
Definitely, tbh this sounds exactly like my former 6th graders (who got promoted to 7th despite barely being able to read and lacking basic math skills) I know it’s just a result of them falling behind in earlier grades and not catching up while still being promoted but it’s still jarring to hear about literal high schoolers with these issues esp since they grow to be the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this adults that continue to have these issues and a lot of people’s first thought is that the education system/their teachers failed them and the system, maybe but as teachers we are doing our best Okay I see these kinda of posts all the time and I want to know who the parents are, because the parents are a huge part of the problem and we can’t solve that problem unless we understand the dynamics. I get that admin keeps passing these kids up and parents refuse to have their kids be held back but there has to be some common thread running through to make sense of all this.
I’ve noticed and found it fascinating that in general, technology skills have gone down for most students in the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this last 5 years. When I first started teaching in 2015, most students knew their way around a computer pretty well, including navigating a PC, problem solving to download programs, etc. Nowadays the same age group (elementary school) have huge problems navigating tech. They struggle to log on to their devices. They don’t know how to type in a web address. They can’t type, and they can’t problem solve on their PC. I always was told and thought that each newer generation would become more and more tech literate. Why does it seem like it has gone backwards in the last 5 years? Has anyone else experienced this? My gut reaction is that maybe tech and apps have become too user friendly with all the streaming and instant gratification and such. It’s almost like when they click a button and something doesn’t work, they have no clue how to troubleshoot. They didn’t have to figure out how to download and install a program to play a game or to get on AIM like I did when I was younger. Thoughts?
Critical thinking amongst adults over the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this next 20 years is gonna be brutal, especially with how they vote and the rise of AI imagery
The thing is: I don’t think kids are any dumber now then they were 10, 20, 50 years ago but I suspect average overall competency was higher then. In these periods parents in general seem to have been much more involved as a whole. Even looking back on my youth (80s/90s) the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this peers that had involved parents performed much better than the ones that did not. What really sucks here is the societal change over the years has had a compounding effect. Bad behaviors used to be harshly handled with pretty severe punishments including literally paddling’s (that still existed when I was a kid). While I feel it is a terrible idea and I am glad we moved away from it as a whole it started a slippery slope where teachers in general had less and less control over student behaviors and corrective actions. When you mix in increased parental apathy we end up where we are today. Personally, I think the solution starts with holding parents accountable. Even if this is some sort of punitive action like there already is in place for truancy. It likely needs to be expanded to force accountability. I don’t know for sure what the correct answer is but we clearly need to do something differently.
I am tired of seeing young adults that can’t even properly make change at a register. They often become baffled if you hand them 21.53 for something that costs 6.53. Yet an older toothless half brain-dead meth head can figure it out. Students do not know how to do their own work. They automatically assume every assignment is free for working together, copying answers, or having off topic conversations. Also they are obsessive about hydration. I got 0-1 sips of water in the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this hallway in a school day. These kids are asking at 8:00 am to go fill up their water bottle as if drinking the first one didn’t hydrate them enough for the day. Mostly I chalk it up to an excuse to leave the room. School is prison, after all. THIS! THANK YOU FOR POSTING. It is as if I was reading my own thoughts and opinions. Correlation between teaching to a test and students lacking basic skills???? Absolutely!
OP do you teach in an inner city in a horribly underfunded school in a dangerous area? It’s just so hard for me to imagine that this is normal. Can you at least specify if you are in a public school or private school? And/or the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this general demographic and income information of the area you are teaching in? Regarding the whole typing thing…does your school not have a typing/computer class for the students? When I was in school in the late 90s/early 2000s we had computer classes and the first thing we learned was how to type properly and there were various typing games that helped teach us. Are these programs no longer being used? I’m not active in this sub so feel free to ignore me if I’m off base here. I have an honest question about modern learning. Can anyone share what transitions teachers/curriculum have made while plowing further into the age of social media and having endless information at the click of a button? It’s disheartening to see our kids falling behind when I know it for certain that the teachers are trying their damndest. So what’s the catch? I had a group of seniors looking at my north-south inverted world map who did not even know that it was “upside down” compared to what we normally see.
A lot of the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this gen z and younger kids crating internet content CONSTANTLY use double positives and double negatives as well as inappropriate suffix/adjective connections. They seem to always use word like ‘more better’, ‘most bestest’ and other jarring-to-hear phrases. On top of that, alot of them have told me that during Covid, most of them just didn’t learn anything from school; so there’s as least a two year gap in their knowledge. Even basic algebra makes them seize up. I’ve been wanting to ask what the hell is going on for some time now, but I can’t think of a non-offensive way to ask the question. These things are starting to become more and more obvious, the younger generations get offended if they are told to look something up and their critical thinking skills aren’t as high. As a millennial, I grew up listing to teachers tell everyone “don’t bother becoming a teacher, you will be underpaid and nobody cares unless they want to blame you for their kids behavior”. So I’m wondering now if other people in my generation were told something similar.
I assume the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this biggest issue is that the under paid, over worked, and under appreciated field of teaching has exacerbated the “running out of teachers” crisis by continuing to shit all over teachers and then ask what happened? Again, I’m not even a teacher, just a millennial looking at the younger generation and wondering who really failed them. (Hint: it’s the parents and the government) It’s okay. There are millions of Indians and Chinese who will step in. These kids can always make it big as influencers /s I teach Fashion Design and my students don’t know how to hold scissors properly, or read a ruler. Can’t measure in 1/2 inches, etc. Also, agree with the other things you have noted about reading and writing. It’s a little concerning.
It broke my heart to know how behind Some of them were, but it also was encouraging to see how some good teaching and hard work changed some of these kids’lives for the Three headed Simpson my eyes are up here Shirt What’s more,I will buy this better too. But, hey, let’s also spend all of our resources on the bottom 25% of students and slow everyone else’s development… And while we’re at it, let’s do holding sociopathic students accountable and then demonize teachers even they are brutally honest with those same sociopaths. I think this is regional. I teach 5th grade ELA and Social Studies and only a few kids read more than one grade below grade level. I’ve also now gotten to the point where almost all of them can answer questions in complete sentences. Not perfect on punctuation and capital letters, but it’s improved significantly. The thing is, I’m teaching a lot of things that are not 5th grade skills along side 5th grade skills. I don’t really care if they want me to, or not. If they don’t have the skill and I need it, I’m going to teach it to them. I have an awesome principal who lets me make professional decisions, and so I’m privileged in that regard. You keep pointing at the kids not knowing. But they have to be taught at some point. Who is failing to teach and passing these kids on? It’s not good, and society is going to adjust its expectations to meet where the next generation is at – it has to really for anything to get done.
