The moment your company calls it self “a family” is the The Name’s Johnny Utah Classic T-Shirt in addition I really love this moment you should start looking for a new job if you haven’t already. “We’re are a family” is code for “I’m going to ask you to do a bunch of stuff you don’t like and try to mask it with an artificial sense of obligation.” Every time a company says they are a “family” or like a “family” they mean the abusive and psychologically controlling and tormenting type of “family”. I’ve known a few people who worked for them over the years, and they turn on you extremely quickly if you become a liability in their eyes. Guy I knew blew out his back working for them and went on disability, they hired a friggin PI to watch him. Tried to deny his claims bc the PI saw him picking up after his dog one day which he couldn’t possibly do with a bad back. It’s incredible the lengths they’ll go to for the sake of protecting their profits.

I’m so sorry, this must have felt like such an insult to see. Good on you for saying something, even if it feels like David & Goliath. My stepfather faced a similar situation. He got cancer and burnt through all of his sick leave, pto and vacation time. Then he used the The Name’s Johnny Utah Classic T-Shirt in addition I really love this FMLA. Once that ran out his company fired him, but not before my mother was forewarned by a friendly HR person and put him on her insurance (they worked for the same company). In retaliation the company demoted my mother from running their advertising department (she reported to a VP) to being the front door receptionist. The only thing that kept her employed and thereby kept my stepfather insured was that she was both willing to take the humiliation and told the owners that any attempt to fire her would result in her doing everything possible to trash them in the public eye. I guess they didn’t want that, so she was allowed to keep her demoted job and my stepfather kept his insurance through her. My mother’s situation is what I always bring up when people talk about not wanting their insurance to change, and not wanting single payer national health care. Sure the insurance you get through work is great if you break a bone, or maybe need to have your appendix removed, but what happens when you get so ill that your treatment lasts longer than your sick leave? Even if you have the best of employers who will work with you, should you be reliant on the good nature of them? Should your employer be the empowered entity in your health, and you subservient to their good will?
