It can be problematic, therefore it is. Albeit your intention may not have been malicious, it’s one of those issues that can be justified but avoidable. It’s a form of establishing social status, even if unconsciously. The beginning of the story started with “a black neighborhood”…now, it can be argued that they were innocently ‘describing the key residents of the area,” but we all know what they meant by that. Dehumanization begins with tiny allowances that eventually justify bigger, more harmful issues. Because of that, I say we should try harder. For example, could you have made the same point by saying “the biggest guy here” or “the guy who usually wears the blue striped shirt”? Probably. So, if that’s the case, why not make the effort?
