Lol I grew up comfortably (well aware of my privilege), but went to a school with a lot of very rich kids. There were absolutely people who threw their toys out of the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this pram and whinged about not getting unfettered access to their trust funds at 18. Disclaimer: while I am in middle class of my country, my region is less wealthy than average so I had relatively wealthy parents as compared to other kids in my (village’s) primary school. One day I wanted to show off new cool stuff I got from parents (I don’t remember what it was, some kind of toy or electronics probably) but my classmates said that I am rich, conceited and I supposedly want to make them feel jealous. (Which wasn’t of course my intent.) That’s how I found out that not every kid was as lucky as I was. But then again, this can also happen if you are not wealthy. If your parents are racist they won’t let you listen to “black music”, no matter the respective level of wealth.
The Christmas Thief Shirt: Perfect for Fans
When Elvis was contemporary he caused a massive puritanical rage fest across most of middle America because of the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this clear (and openly acknowledged) black influence on his music and dancing. Was he paying back student debt at the time? Doctors frequently have massive loans from the number of years they were in school, compounded by years of residency before they start making bigger money. My father (who’s a businessman) told me same thing and also i always Heard his and mother’s conversation so yea :-/ I had a friend in college like this. Her dad is super rich, but also super greedy so would never spend much of his money on anyone else because it was his money. I’m not rich so I’m speculating, but I do wonder about people like that. Perhaps he comes from poverty himself and has a thing about not wasting money, sort of like the depression era folks who became hoarders later in life? I’ve heard of some rich people telling their kids that they are the rich ones, not the kids, and they need to learn to make their own money. I respect it, but if they’re just being stingy for the sake of it when they could help their kid through college, then that’s a different thing. This pretty much describes my parents. They were doing FIRE long before it was a thing. They both grew up in poverty, and as soon as they started earning some real money, they saved as much as they could. One of their strategies was to buy the smallest, cheapest home in the nice part of town, so they could reap the benefits of rapid price appreciation. My siblings and I all got teased for wearing hand-me-downs from thrift stores while all the kids at school were wearing the latest designer labels. I never heard the end of it when my parents appeared in a TV ad for a well-known local thrift store chain. They also drove a 20 year old station wagon while all the other kids at school were being picked up in BMWs and Audis. My parents were millionaires by their early 40s back in the 80s when being a millionaire was still kind of a big deal, but you would have never guessed it from looking at us.
I don’t know, I heard a lot of “We can’t afford that” or “That’s very expensive, are you SURE that’s what you want?” as a kid. It honestly took me a long time to realize that we weren’t poor, we were actually quite rich compared to our neighbors in a low SES area, and the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this REASON we were rich was because my parents were careful with money. So, while all my friends had flatscreens by 2010, we were watching on a 25-year-old box that had the wrong ratio so it cut off the scores when you watched sport, until it eventually died in 2017. While my friends were taking family holidays overseas, we’d make the drive interstate (Australia has big states, not like a drive between states in the US) to see family because plane tickets were too expensive. While my friends got iPhones, I got the cheapest or second-cheapest option we could find, and I looked after it until it was no longer functional. We didn’t have air conditioning in our house until a couple years ago.

Some information about The Christmas Thief Shirt
Edit: To be clear, my friends obviously weren’t “Power’s been shut off, can’t eat for a few days” poor. They ranged from “We’re sharing chips for dinner because we can’t afford anything more”, to “Stuck renting forever” poor. Hard to tell if we’re talking about people in the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this depths of poverty, or just normal low socioeconomic families. A well off child may go a very long time before they encounter someone with far fewer means and will be generally shielded from the harsher economic realities of life, but there’s no hiding the fact that the refrigerator’s empty, the power got shut off, and the car doesn’t run from a poor kid. That reality is only theoretical for the affluent kid, something they have heard about. For the poor kid it’s real life.
funny enough i have a rich friend that lives with his family in a rich area filled with rich tech industry ppl. Their daughter ( 7ish), said in front of other parents–Why don’t we have a tesla? Are we very poor? ( they are definitely not poor, no where near. I’ve visited and thought i got the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this address wrong when it took me to apartment building that ended up being their whole house) We always had power and money enough for food, but I remember watching movies or tv shows and the family had multiple bathrooms, or multiple cars or went on vacations with travel involved and that all seemed like lavish wealth to me. I worked in a high affluent school and the kids were all crazy about “cal vs Stanford” for their future college. They asked me where I went and I told them a state school. They said, “why?”
Yes. I was always pretty well aware that we were poor. It always blew my mind when I was a kid that my rich friends had no idea they were rich. Like, genuinely didn’t see it, and would get offended when you would suggest it. I would be thinking, “you’ve been to my apartment. You’ve seen that I share one bedroom with my brother and sister, and that we live in an area that has gang members outside, we have one 20-year old car, and we have one tiny TV in the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this living room and a secondhand NES that doesn’t work. You’ve seen this. You, on the other hand, have your own room in a very large house at the top of a hill and your own swimming pool with a water slide and 4 big-screen TVs with three different gaming systems and three new cars even though only two people in your family drive. Do you really not see a difference in our circumstances? Does this not lead to any conclusions for you?”
(And to be clear, none of these kids were bad people at all, they just didn’t understand how different our circumstances were because they’d never been forced to understand it. When you constantly see other kids have things you can’t, you’re painfully aware of it. The reverse is much easier not to notice.) This is why I feel sorry for some of those rich kids who get quoted saying things like “If people can’t afford to rent, why don’t they just buy?”. I mean, yeah, it’s an embarrassingly dumb thing to say but how can you make your mind understand that everyone doesn’t have what you have? But he’ll mention something he thought was normal for everyone, like his mom’s wine of the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this month club or Taco Bell lunches at his private school and I’ll explain that’s because of their income. He takes it so personal I find it amusing. It started the first time we ran out of fun money. He started panicking about being broke and I laughed.pauday was three days off. We had savings, our bills were paid and fridge was full. Broke was not us. Subjectively, to him, we were. But to me? I’d spent days without eating, counting pennies to feed my kids before. It’s all about the perspective.
Funny thing is, not a decade later, we chose to drop our income for a slower life. He no longer panics if we can’t go out to eat. But he’s still a little touchy about it. My ex was this way too. We had very different standards for what constituted broke/normal. One time I joked about having to do the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this plumbing ourselves and she said “wtf really? That’s impossible! How can you do the plumbing yourselves, it could void your homeowner’s insurance.” I could only laugh tbh. Or when she’d point out people who were clearly just working class and say they looked “trashy” or something along those lines. Not everybody can afford a second Michael Kors bag The number of wealthy kids I grew up around who actually thought they were “lower middle class” still astounds me. My ex was from the exurbs, and could never fathom how that wasn’t the baseline. Even knowing most people on the planet come from a worse situation than she did, zero empathy.
I think most assessments of personal wealth tend to be comparative. So if most of the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this people they know have roughly the same things, they won’t feel special. Similarly, to someone very poor, a lower middle class family might seem well off. i thought i was poor because all my friends were. i didn’t realize how well off we were until probably late middle school/early high school. that made me realize why they always wanted to come to my house. it somehow came as a big shock but my parents acted like no matter how much we had it wasn’t enough so i thought we didn’t have a lot. so i would definitely say yes. it’s embarrassing but it taught me a lot Got there, he lived on a 3 story house, where the upper floor was solid glass all the way around, with 3 different fireplaces on the top floor–which included one in the center with a floating chimney, and the couch that went all the way around. It had TWO wrap around decks, he had 2 boats in the lakefront yard, one of which we could sleep on if we wanted. He had a lego room–an entire room for legos. I was dumbfounded. He had no idea–he thought he was poor. Like–dude, no. His mom drove us to my house to drop me off, and i think it was his first time EVER seeing a poor person’s actual house. We didnt remain friends after that–i think he figured something out, might a felt bad, idk.
I had a similar experience. Went to a friend’s house for Chinese New Year in 4th grade. It wasn’t a house, it was a fucking mansion. In the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this middle of Singapore. Moved to Australia about two months later. A few years ago my mum brought that incident up again, and that was when I learned her dad was Tianqiao Chen… who has an estimated net worth of $4 fucking billion USD. When I was in middle school, I went to a private ‘rich kids’ school. My parents weren’t rich though, my parents spent most of their money putting me in a good school. One time a good friend of mine gave me a ride home with her driver, and when she saw my house she spontaneously gave me the most innocent “why is it so small?”, I had no idea how to respond lmao. Her driver told her off though, he said “No don’t say that, that’s rude”. Still remained friends after that though. I thought my parents struggled with money growing up, but they were just extremely cheap when it came to spending money.
Absolutely. I had one good sweatshirt that I wore of Fridays. When you aren’t eating or dressing like the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this others, you notice real quick. I might add: skipping school trips, oversized clothes from older siblings or second hand, old textbooks from the library, not being able to afford school cafeteria, etc. Recently I was talking with my mom and I told her: “We really were ahead of our times back then, eating vegetarian most days of the week”. She responded with a laughter: “We were just poor!”. I have family members raised in homes where 50k a month income was the norm–absolutly positive that they were poor and middle class. They have no clue, even into their 30’s–their wealth has SO insulated them, they STILL dont see poor people. They assume EVERYONE is living in a gated community, because that’s where they’ve always lived. Even their dorms were gated in college. They had no idea what their parents were paying. They’ve literally never step foot in a walmart, target, etc. They’ve got no idea.
I grew up in a coastal tourist town where a good chunk of the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this locals were poor and so it was common for many of us to not have luxuries. I didn’t think much of the $10 basic cable, shopping at Ames, and hand me down video games from my cousins, and jalopy of a car. When you’re a kid, you just get used to your life and how you live and think it’s normal. Whether you lack a lot of stuff, or have too much stuff, it all feels normal to you. You only realize it isn’t normal when you are around other people who have different experiences and talking to each other you start to realize your experience is very different or if you see it on TV or something and see people who aren’t living the way you do being treated a certain way and people that live like you do being treated a different way.
I grew up in a house with roaches and a dozen leaks in the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this roof so every time it rained we had to put out buckets to catch it so it didn’t destroy the floorboards worse than it already had. I never really thought much about it, it was just how you lived. But when i’d watch TV, i’d see other people that didn’t live that way and it kind of made me realize it wasn’t always like that. But even after I knew it wasn’t normal, it was still normal to me, so I still didn’t really feel poor or anything even though intellectually I knew that I was. It was only after getting out of that situation and living a more normal life did I really start to reflect and look back and realize just how bad I had it.
I felt that I had a genuine understanding of middle class was when I was a teen. I knew how much $60-$80k was. Idk why, but I was looking at rents in places I liked even as a teenager. I went to college and knew a kid who said that one summer their dad’s company was doing poorly so they had to do vacation at their lake house instead of a trip to Europe. So yeah. There are wealthy people who are fully grown 24 year olds that still think they’re “salt of the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this earth, blue collar, working men” but own multiple homes and got a brand new $50k truck at 16. Edit: I’m not poor at all. We typically had a vacation every year. Parents made about $80-$90k combined, w/ 3 kids. We had a lot of “can’t afford that” moments, but that doesn’t make us poor. I was never hungry once. Even as a young person, I knew how fortunate I was and how unfair it was for others.
I think it depends on your neighbors and friends at school which one realizes what bracket they’re in first. I just thought we were normal middle class. It wasn’t until I was in my 30’s did I realize that some people thought we had money. Rich kids seldom hear “no,” so they skate a long ways into their life before realizing their privilege. Many never do. I think so. I noticed the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this part of my childhood that was poor way more than when it changed. And rich just goes up. You can start having the ability to have things and more things and then what once felt like a luxury becomes the standard. For what it’s worth, I gained the parts of my personality I liked more when I was being raised by a poor single mom. You only realize there’s a difference between wealth and poverty when you experience that difference. I grew up in pretty dire circumstances, and while I noticed life wasn’t awesome, I didn’t really know we were ‘poor’ as such. It wasn’t until I started high school in a really affluent area and realized how some people lived that I realized I had grown up poor.
However, as your question is worded, it’s always easier to notice the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this absence of something than to notice a constant presence. Something being constantly present fades into the background. I mean, do you notice you have hot running water every day? The human mind expects that if you want something, you can also get it. So from a psychological point of view it never seems weird to have all your needs met until you consciously compare yourself to others. Meanwhile, being hungry/cold/lacking stuff you need will always seem wrong to you even if you were born into poverty Depends on the company they keep. If they’re surrounded with similar people, it takes longer. If they’re around people of different socioeconomic levels, they’ll notice sooner.
I didn’t realize how poor I was growing up because everyone in my neighborhood and school lived the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this same as me. No. Uniforms are a great way to make children seem more equal in school. Can’t tell easily who only has one uniform they wash by hand versus the kid who has one for each day of the week. I’d imagine yes because they see other kids having stuff that they don’t have. Maybe not but that’s how I feel. My guess is as soon as they are old enough to see what other people can buy and are told they cannot afford it, they understand. Definitely by the time they enter elementary school, they know although they might not comprehend the vast differences in people’s wealth. I was in a grocery store with my son. He’s looking at cookies and yells over to me, hey mom, do we have a coupon for these cookies?? I guess I was into using coupons and he knew the game. Probably. If you never get vacations, special toys, or new clothes and you get food from the food bank, it’s pretty obvious, but not all wealthy families believe in conspicuous consumption. I have a friend who didn’t realize the extent of her parents’ wealth until after her father died (her mother died years before). She and her sister inherited stupid rich fuck you money. She grew up comfortable but not spoiled rotten. My family was pretty well off until I was about 15, lived in a large country style home, nice cars etc and then for a number of reasons ended up living in a shitty single wide mobile home and slept on the floor with my brothers and sisters because it was a one bedroom. I saw both sides of the coin. My rich friends growing up seemed to be aware early on that they were rich and they were pretty cruel to kids who were perceived as poor, particularly if they were non white. I am non white but because my parents had money they just kind of accepted me and behaved how they would if I was white, meaning they’d say all kinds of racist jokes around me and expect me to say nothing and just go along with it. It was almost like their money gave them license to be shitty people. So they were keenly aware that they were privileged and weaponized it.
When I lived around poor people they seemed way more down to earth and genuine. Yeah there were some shitty people but it seemed to come from a place of struggling to get through life. There were no rich people at our school so a lot of kids didn’t really realize that they were poor relative to the The Christmas Thief Shirt moreover I love this people I used to go to school with. They did give me a hard time at first because my clothes were nicer than theirs. I had to dress down to fit in. Mate, there are wildly wildly wealthy people who become adults without realising how skewed their life has been. No way they’d cotton on before a 2yo getting told no by their folks at a shop. The first thing i bought when i got a job early 90s was bought a pair of avia spiders the 17 years of always getting shoes on a budget had taken its toll on my psyche and still remains to this day , brokeness burns itself into your brain one way or another . Yes. I have friends who have parents who are rich and by proxy they are. I talk about the struggle with housing and they’re like “yeah it’s so bad!!!” But then they think paying $850 a month for a house in Washington is bad… Even though the parents bought them that house. They’re still in denial about what exactly it’s like to have wealth.
