I once got a job very close to Reading and lived in Cardiff. After 4 weeks of daily commuting (by car) I called it quits! A friend of my dad lives near a very small airport in France that flies into city airport. He flies into London for the day at least once a week. At Uni one lecturer would drive from cambridge to west London everyday and back, he said it was 2 hours there and 2 hours back. 2 1/2 hours each-way for me. A colleague commuted for over 10 years from Swansea. He basically slept on the trains and had about 4 hours a day at home. Also, due to someone moving during the pandemic and then the company changing their policy regarding office working, I know someone who now has to commute to London twice a week from York. On non-consecutive days. i’ve known quite a few people living in switzerland or germany, “commuting” to london twice a week. door to door with normal travel it’s a 6 hour journey. sometimes they can travel with a higher up’s jet, which decreases the traveltime to 2,5 hours. these phases of commuting last for a few months, interspersed with a few months of home office and the odd longer stay in london. they’re in banking or pharma. most where in complete disbelief at the situation they found themselves in and quit fairly soon. a few embrace it to creepy levels and slowly morph into wannabe musks, becoming increasingly isolated and obnoxious.

From Tunbridge Wells to central London here, takes me about 1:20 door to door. Luckily I WfH on Fridays these days. Used to commute from Wakefield to London – only a couple of times a month, and I lived 10min walk from the station andwork was only 15min walk from Kings Cross. My favourite was in the reverse direction in the 90’s – morning train to Rugby including a classic BR breakfast, four nights in a pub, then back to home in New Cross for the weekend. Did that for a year on some software development project; saved a lot of money as all the travel, accommodation and food were on expenses…
