I work in an elementary school and it breaks my heart the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this number of significantly behind students who don’t qualify for an IEP. There are lots of exclusionary factors, attendance being one of them. In order to qualify for an IEP, the student must have evidence of a learning disability that is impacting their academic performance. Students who are chronically tardy and absent, or who simply don’t have a good support network at home, fall behind but are unable to qualify for an IEP. These days everyone gets promoted regardless of academic performance, so these kids just get further and further behind each year. Until schools return to truth in grading and actually holding students accountable for knowledge of the content, things will only continue to get worse. This problem started happening before the pandemic, and Covid only exacerbated the problem.

Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt: buy and enjoy this shirt

I had to explain to my eighth graders which hand was their right hand a week ago. I almost walked out that day. I think it’s easy to blame our fear of “failing.” I’d love to see a shift in mindset though, where we simply hold students accountable to some really fair and reasonable benchmarks in order to pass to the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this next grade. division (single digits) — dividing and multiplying by 1 really is confusing to them. and simplifying fractions is really rough. 10. many don’t know that north south east and west exist let alone how to tell which direction is which on a map. 12. there are 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. and lengths of sunlight time changes based on the time of the year 13. fahrenheit and celsius aren’t measures of “fire hot” and “cold” and you can have warm and cold temperatures on either scale. a kid asks me how it was possible to have 100 degrees of cold. took me a WHILE to parse that question. 14. california is not another country. we are in arizona. one kid doesn’t have a passport so he can’t go to california. womp womp, i guess. Chiming in as a college tutor, I was just asked by a freshman if we go around the sun or if it goes around the Earth. Idk how I managed to keep a straight face
We just went to an all day PD the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this other day and just like any other PD, I can’t get myself to buy into any of what they’re selling. I mean they’re not bad strategies but they’re strategies that require time, commitment, and a student body that gives a shit. None of these PD stuff means a lick when students are so far behind, don’t give a damn, or can’t behave like their age. So excuse me when I’m told the barrier to student success is not enough SCAFFOLDING. No. The barrier to student success are students, lack of parenting, and a culture continually pushes the importance of superficial things. I’ll allow for all of the spot crazy things that kids are unprepared for in high school. You will always have outliers in class that even their peers gawk at for what they don’t know. What gets me more is the utter apathy and open disdain to try that a decent number of kids exhibit. No resilience to failure, no appetite to struggle with a hard assignment or question. No ability to critically think or troubleshoot. Just total non thinkers. When kids realize after they do nothing for an entire school year that they still stay with their friends and go to the next year it teaches them that there are no stakes, and that effort is not mandatory. It doesn’t benefit the kids to move them along, it just placates parents and infuriates teachers. The kids need real responsibility, and as much as we can try to hold their hand in class eventually you need to show you can succeed on your own. I thought my diploma didn’t mean much when I graduated but it means even less now.

Description for Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt

The ugly truth is NCLB, standardized testing, and tying funding to all the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this bullshit data points has ruined education in the U.S. A fun byproduct is societal push and acceptance of parents as friends who believe they have no control or recourse over their own children. I was going through some old papers at my parents house over the weekend. My mom keeps all of our stuff including old homework assignments lol. I just have to say that I was shocked reading some of my papers from second grade because my handwriting and general writing skill were exponentially better than the students I teach now who are the same age and older. Disagree on research skills. In two hours they can find the answers to the Chem homework, which would have taken them 20 minutes to work.
And yet, in my state the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this standardized tests are still ludicrously hard. Like, honors level material and I’m supposed to get them to pass. How??? Districts are all about “rigor” and “high expectations” but we can’t get kids to learn to read. My 5th graders are tested on Renaissance artists(new ELA curriculum) but can’t read at a 2nd grade level. It’s so ridiculous. We’re supposed to make the curriculum accessible to everyone. How?!? It’s rather scary to learn that my severely autistic kid with a learning disability is actually doing significantly better than the general population you’re describing. I’m not even that great of a parent, I’d consider myself low-average, but all of my son’s teachers love me because I do basic things like get him on the bus on time and follow through with discipline at home. Is that really exceptional these days? It’s below basic from my perspective. I’m an elementary music teacher, so some of the words that I teach, I expect errors. Music uses a lot of Italian words, so I grade assignments gently. However, the words students ask for help on are not “forte”, “piano”, “crescendo”, and so on… I had a third grader ask me how to spell “help”. Several fifth graders gave me “konsrt revew” instead of “concert review”. And the handwriting is practically illegible, even in fifth graders. As a first year teacher, it made me so sad. I remember handwriting being a grade when I was a kid. I remember spelling tests each week on vocab words. I don’t know if times have changed or what. I hope it can get better.
As a parent with 2 young kids – failing has to be a thing again. What is all this butterfly “can’t fail a kid” bullshit that’s somehow made its way into the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this system. On top of that school has seemingly completely stopped disciplining kids which is the worst idea. Parents can’t take on that burden and try to discipline their kid for something they did 7 hours ago. this was my experience going through school. gen z born in 2002. it’s been like this for 10-15 years if not longer since this is how I remember my schooling experience. kids around me couldn’t read the time on a clock in highschool. we didn’t learn well and there isn’t enough time or resources for the educators to focus on an individual and help them. this country would rather fund wars across the globe then invest in educating it’s citizens. dumb citizens are easier to control. I learned a lot online, manually. I often wonder where my old classmates are today
Nobody wants to piss off the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this parents, nobody wants to piss off the kids, nobody cares about pissing off the teachers or the bus drivers or the aides and the Admins piss on it all. And the public is like why are my tax dollars going to all this piss?!?? This is the result of no child left behind. School districts will not allow teachers to fail kids. Entire program has been watered down. I was subbing for a combined 4th/5th grade class and handed out a two-sided assignment. The second side only bled over to about half a page. Many students didn’t bother to check for both sides and only handed me one side completed before I told them there was more. Of those kids, many only completed the backside, not realizing there was a front.
They thought I handed them an assignment with no title, date, or space for a name that had numbered questions starting at number 5, and no alarms in their heads told them there might be another side to it. We’re in an ebb and flow period not to dissimilar to the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this 1920s. Right now what we’re seeing is the psychological and socioemotional effects of a global pandemic and isolation for 2.5 years. A lot of these kids probably learned these things, but lost them in the 2.5 years where they just didn’t have much of an education, like how I imagine most of the normal working population probably couldn’t solve for a slope at the moment if I asked them (Hell I barely can). Kind of like that Are you smarter than a fifth grader show. We’re kind of going through that. There’s a reason they call that generation “lost” in the 20s. They basically got fucked by world wars, pandemics and mass starvation. It took another war and time before their kids wisened up and built the highways.
We likely will be seeing these effects to be honest for a hot minute. Third graders can probably catch up but we likely wont see a rebound until the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this current 4th graders on are through and out to God knows where. So what? 8 years? It’s gonna suck for Alpha like it sucked for Gen X and other middle generations, but we’ll probably see a boon and uptick then. Look at Oregon, dropping all graduation requirements in the name of “equity”. Now there’s no basic reading, writing and math skills required for students to graduate with a high school diploma. What’s the actual fucking point of it at all now? They’re just churning out useless, ill-equipped morons into society just to save from offending anyone by requiring them to fulfil the basic requirements of being a functioning member of the community.
TikTok says it’s okay, just keep making videos and once the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this girls hit 18 make an onlyfans. Who needs to have any value to society anymore? It’s a struggle down the earliest grades. Mainly with eroding attention spans and the meteoric rise in learned helplessness. Thank goodness my district still invests in mandatory CS classes for K-5. I’ve seen more than one KDG student come in trying to pinch-to-zoom on a piece of paper. Some of these kids just don’t want to do anything. If it requires more than a modicum of effort, it’s “boring” or “too hard.” Many struggle to follow even single step directions — they want someone else to do things for them. They can’t for the life of them follow along with guided projects that include step-by-step picture & text instructions.
I try and take an interest in what students are up to outside of school. I’ll ask what they did the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this previous evening or weekend…”Played my Switch”, “watched YouTube”, “played on my iPad” have got to be the 3 most popular answers. Way too many have unfettered access to the internet at home. It’s just pathetic how lax many parents are with tech at home. Commenting as a parent to a 4 year old entering pre-k this year, hold out hope. Myself and the other parents my age I know are trying! We are not a privledged group either. I’m working with my daughter on phonics, writing, basic addition and subtraction. She knows how to write her name, her address, what her mom and dads names are. I am a young parent and I have seen firsthand through my own childhood how smartphones and social media changed kids and I plan to continue educating at home when she is in school.
I teach elementary and it’s because they’re forcing us to teach kids insanely complicated things. I’m in 3rd, where they basically stop learning to read and start the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this focus on reading to learn waaaay too early. I’m trying to force them through 4 paragraph essays one stupid sentence frame at a time because god forbid they explore creative writing and editing and focus on spelling tests and stuff. Our curriculum basically guides them towards all writing the same Dang essay and they don’t even know yet to capitalize their sentences and I have no time at all to focus on the true basics anymore. They ask these kids sit for 3-4 straight hours of what is essentially lecture courses with a few turn and talks thrown in to pretend they’re engaged and each day we write one sentence of an essay that is basically all framed for them and all they have to do is plug in a few words and voila! An essay is done after two months and the kids still can’t write.
They spend all of math futzing around with the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this tools on the iReady program because the workbook only has them practice like one problem per day and discuss it ad nauseum and no one can multiply after 3 months because they only will use a multiplication square from the book and won’t spend a single second doing a calculation like 3×6. I ran one of our reading assessments through a level checker and it came back at 10th grade so no wonder they’re all failing here in 3rd, they’re staring at a 10th grade level worksheet because “rigor” and getting nothing out of their education and therefore can’t even understand the same dang worksheet once they’ve reached 10th grade. And if I give ‘em an extra recess bc they’re 9 years old and bouncing off the walls, well, I get reamed bc instructional minutes matter even though their energy is so high we might as well all be beating our heads against the wall instead of barely even pretending to grasp the complexity of our ELA curriculum. I may be totally wrong but I think kids are burned out before they hit 5th grade. They have an hour a night of homework in kindergarten and don’t get to just be kids. I also believe this is why people are so mean now. They never learned just cooperating and being kind. Just because a lesson is done over it doesn’t mean they really learn it. I say give the kids a break- no desks in kindergarten. Only centers and book time and counting time and colors and art. When I taught preschool I had parents of 3 year olds upset their child couldn’t read yet. We aren’t letting children’s brain take him to form.
What can be done now? Discuss with admin? Address school boards? The last time parents got super “passionate” at school board meetings, they were labeled domestic terrorists by the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this DOJ. That doesn’t exactly leave people feeling like there’s an open door policy to come forward when things don’t seem right. And things really DON’T SEEM RIGHT. It is mind boggling how this seemingly trickle down crisis has overtaken our education system. Zero accountability for students, parents, admin, school boards, politicians, etc…except for teachers, who are held to frighteningly unrealistic standards. Pushing kids through in an effort to keep numbers looking good, so that money keeps coming in. Appeasing parents so no one gets offended…lying about students true grade levels in the process…it’s just all wrong. All of it.
As a band teacher, I feel this. Either the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this kids can play really really well or they are freaking clueless. I know what would make a difference in bridging the gap, mainly more (or any) at-home practice, combined with private lessons or at least more one-on-one tutoring… the first of which requires more buy-in than a lot of the struggling kids can muster, and the latter funds (either from the school to hire more help or from the parents to sign them up for lessons). But in the meantime we have a band that has a core of 15-20% of really awesome kids that can play like crazy, a very small group or maybe anywhere 10-20% that are borderline and another 60-70% that are pretty clueless and just along for the ride.
How about going old school? Before students are allowed to use any device, they can write their name, alphabet, and numbers. Writing sentences? A student asked me what was 16+16, I told them 32 and was asked how I knew the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this answer so quickly. I said when I was in school, we had to practice learning fact families just like they were learning except we had to write them. People want to blame the pandemic even when this was happening before then. Now, some students benefit from technology. Not all students are ready, though. I teach 4th grade in an urban area. Almost every single student in my class reads at a K-1st reading level. That means letter sounds for a lot of them Just because they know how to use their phones does not mean they know how to use a computer. They are not familiar with common keyboard shortcuts. They also cannot type properly. Some students type using their index fingers. This has been the general population for all of time and will likely continue to be the case. Hardly anyone can do adequate information research.
The data contradicts this sentiment and as educators we are part of the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this problem if we don’t base arguments on learning, reason and evidence backed information. I mean yeah. I never learned geography because around 2008-2009 the state of Texas decided that it wasn’t necessary because it wasn’t on the standardized tests. Students are taught to the tests, if it’s deemed unimportant then it gets skipped. Phonics aren’t taught and neither is sentence diagraming, as far as the system is concerned students don’t need to be able to read or comprehend at higher levels than what it takes to answer questions about reading passages. It certainly doesn’t help that a LOT of focus in the 2010s got shifted to pumping out as many STEM kids as possible, often contributing to an attitude of “Why would I need to be able to read Dickens, I’m going to design rockets.” (Real quote from a guy in my class in junior year of high school, he got a NASA internship that summer)
I wrote one research paper in all of my time in middle and high school. One, because on the Thank you for changing my life i’m literally just Aaron Gordon Denver Nuggets shirt In addition,I will do this AP tests and SAT/ACT you would need to rely entirely on memorized knowledge so as far as teachers were concerned doing any outside research was cheating. Doing the research also would’ve required the teachers to take us to the computer lab or make us use our own technology because the school didn’t have enough Chromebooks for even every other class to have a cart. Teaching us how to research became one of those things that fell to the wayside because we didn’t need that skill right now, it wasn’t in the curriculum, and we were already behind by a week (We were always somehow behind by a week, in every class. No clue what that was about, I got written up for disrespect the one time I asked what we needed to rush to make time for.) so proper research techniques became “something you’ll learn in college”. My university had 2 first-year writing classes that were specifically to undo these teachings because coming out of high school even students strong in English were incapable of writing a proper college essay.
