lower physical risk, lower stress levels, less overtime, public non-profit versus private-owned for profit, less specialized. it’s (literally) not rocket science. And if you don’t think nurses deal with stress or any overtime (especially in recent years), then that’s laughable. The problem is that society at large does indeed view jobs meant for women as what you describe. Men have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this true strong jobs that matter and require hard work and effort while women do all the weak ones. But that’s just not the case. You’re vastly overgeneralizing entire fields. The jobs marked to be meant for women are inherently seen as lesser because of the association. You’re trying to say that women take the hardest, most stressful jobs for less pay. Why don’t these women just apply to those easy high paying jobs that the men are doing?

In the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this teaching case, there is a combination of oversupply of teachers, and governments are bad at paying competitive wages (not just in teaching) even when labor markets tighten. The question remains, why are so many women continuing to go into teaching if it’s such a bad and badly paying job? Have you talked to any teachers about this? Because the ones men dominate are mining, oil rig work, crab fishing, etc. All sorts of highly dangerous life threatening work that pays well. It’s literally 99.99% men by choice. It’s not sexism lol So women get to work less while living comparatively similar financial lifestyles sounds like women have it better. Men are generally more ABLE to accept last minute overtime, due to women overwhelmingly being needed for child/family caregiving. Yeah exactly. You can’t have two people who are both able to take a high earning but demanding job unless they have a nanny. Someone (usually the woman) has to take a regular hours job to account for pick up and drop off times at daycares and schools. Childcare barely accommodates normal working hours, it certainly doesn’t accommodate someone picking up an extra shift last minute. There’s an amazing book by Australian political reporter Annabel Crabb called “The Wife Drought” about this exact phenomenon and how (in Australia at least) it’s one of the leading causes of pay inequality. I was trying to stay away from this not because I believe it’s incorrect (I believe it’s correct) but because none of the studies I’ve seen went deep enough to separate women with kids and those without to prove it
Well, everyone has parents, and parents age. The lack of study is pretty reflective of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this care/concern/attention to women’s issues. See: all of medical history The wage gap was found several decades ago, however the main study I know of that recognizes overtime pay as being a main reason is only a few years old, so hopefully someone somewhere is going further. We could argue that neither side wants to study it further, as one side wants to pretend it doesn’t exist and the other finds it useful to use as a talking point, but I really don’t want to so I’m signing off here Work that is stereotypically feminine is paid less too. When mostly men were elementary school teachers they were paid relatively more. When mostly women were programmers in the 70s, they were paid relatively less.

Which are low paying BECAUSE women do them which leads to them working less hours and taking care of kids and household instead. The fun part is when you do a side by side comparison of employees in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this same job years of experience same title they are paid the same regardless of gender. Laws only work if they are enforced. If nobody knows what their coworkers are paid, which is considered rude to ask, then nobody gets the law involved, and employers get away with it. Laws aren’t forcefields. That is what audits are for, like the now quite famous BBC one where more men by number got raises (but a higher % of women got raises) because there were individuals being underpaid in both camps. Also, newer studies show that amongst young people, women get paid more for the exact same job. This can partly be traced to more women graduating from colleges, as high as 60-40 split, for close to 40 years now. The pendulum has already swung the other way and is resulting in a rise of women unable to find partners that are able to outearn them. Yup. Folks think the stat is if a woman and man have the same exact job, the man is getting 23 cents less per dollar. And that isn’t the case (I read once that stat is more like 3 cents). That study only looked at physical therapist jobs, where strength is a factor. I can’t find a free copy of the full text, but the page you linked doesn’t mention this. There are obviously women who can be good at the job, but testosterone gives men a physical advantage (like all other physically demanding jobs).
Not anymore, not with recent data. They absolutely used to, though. When limiting age to <40, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this last study I read had women earning more than their male peers. Not in the way it is claimed by many, but I’m sure there still is some left. Over recent decades, there has been a significant increase in the number of women entering the workforce. Typically, these women began their careers at a younger age, meaning that the older segment of the workforce remains predominantly male. It is important to note that individuals in the latter stages of their careers generally command higher salaries compared to those who are earlier in their career paths. Also the whole overtime thing. Man do way more overtime than women on average and that is rewarded financially. Interestingly, the work related casualties, over 90% are men, and no one gives a toss. Equally is just another tool.
I think most jobs with significant risks have made lots and lots of safety changes over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this years. For example, truck drivers limited the hours worked, installed safety devices, etc. But some jobs, like driving, are inherently more risky than others, like office work, agreed? Almost nothing can be done to make driving equally as risky as sitting in an office. Given the above that nothing can be done to equalize job safety between jobs, the entire issue is men actually apply for riskier jobs more frequently than women do. The gender safety gap exists because of statistical job choices men/women have made. multiple reasons. answers below are of course all stereotypes, but stereotypes are exaggerations of a perceived reality.
men championing anything is generally frowned upon. partially because of a frequent overlap with alt-righty types (though to be fair, there’s a strong overlap with alt-left / cringe-left types and feminist causes), partially because societally we just dont care about men. we’re expandable. also because men naturally are worse at risk perception, and that’s then strengthened through societally men not giving a fuck and society not giving a fuck about men. Males are involved with more fatal accidents in general, beginning as children, so have to adjust for this Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this behavioral aspect to get a more accurate view. As usual, all human behavior is deterministic and entirely a result of societal factors, and we as society are responsible for bad outcomes for specific groups, EXCEPT for men who are entirely responsible for their own shit.
But the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this statistic mentioned refers to the entire society. The pay gap is likelier to be a result of more systemic issues. Men are more often considered for higher positions, and are more encouraged to seek promotions out. Women are more likely to take parental leave, which doesn’t always include pay. Fields dominated by women or heavily associated with them, like teaching for example, infamously pay very little. It’s more complicated than just “men get paid better”, but when you get down to it, it’s still probably some sort of result from what used to be a deeply patriarchal society. (And even then is far from perfect in the modern day.) There’s a lot of room between “women equally push for and achieve higher levels of their careers” and “women too dumb”.
There is actual inequality. It’s more complicated than you’ll get from reddit comments. This is why classes like women’s studies exist It’s not correctly described. It’s not a “wage gap”, it’s a “total earnings gap” caused by a combination of social factors, lifestyle choices and discrimination. The reality is somewhere in between and not something that can be generalised or over-simplified. Women tend to take lower paying jobs, work fewer hours, less commonly take (or aren’t given) senior roles. Women take time off to raise children. All these things reduce their average overall earnings despite most places having laws that prevent discrimination. Conversely men tend to hold most of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this highest paying positions, most billionaires are men, men don’t usually take extended leave to raise children, they get overtime and danger money for risking their lives etc. Men earn more over their life because they take fewer breaks and hold higher paying jobs.
Great points! I would also add that some women also pause their careers somewhat during their kids’ early years so they can focus on taking them to school and picking them up, and then after they start school or are older, jump back into career mode and climb the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this ladder, a few years later than they would if they didn’t choose to slow down. A total earnings gap definitely makes sense. Calling it a wage gap implies that women are paid less to do the exact same job with all other variables held constant which is completely untrue. My understanding is that there is still a wage gap between men and women doing similar work, it’s just notably smaller than the overall wage gap which is influenced by the things described above. This is a result of societal expectations of men and women “should” behave, with men being rewarded for being pushy in salary and position negotiating while women are viewed as difficult and annoying for engaging in similar behaviors.
Where have you seen that data? Every study I’ve heard of finds that childless women earn as much or more than childless men, in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this same role. Deeply ingrained societal gender roles lie at the root of the gender gap in negotiated outcomes, researchers have concluded. In many cultures, girls are encouraged and expected to be accommodating, concerned with the welfare of others, and relationship-oriented from an early age. Notably, these goals clash with the more assertive behaviors considered to be essential for negotiation success, which is more in line with societal expectations that boys and men be competitive, assertive, and profit-oriented. As a result, women may be uncomfortable negotiating forcefully on their own behalf, a tendency that’s supported by evidence suggesting they face a social backlash in the workplace for doing so.
This article references research, but doesn’t link to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this specific examples: Breaking those figures down, within-job differences — or pay for jobs that are substantially the same, for the same employer — were smaller than the overall gap yet still substantial. Women make 7% less than their male counterparts doing the same work for the same company in Denmark and France, and 26% less in Japan. For the U.S., the figure was 14%; in Spain, the gap was slightly smaller at 12% Extant research on the gender pay gap suggests that men and women who do the same work for the same employer receive similar pay, so that processes sorting people into jobs are thought to account for the vast majority of the pay gap. Data that can identify women and men who do the same work for the same employer are rare, and research informing this crucial aspect of gender differences in pay is several decades old and from a limited number of countries. Here, using recent linked employer–employee data from 15 countries, we show that the processes sorting people into different jobs account for substantially less of the gender pay differences than was previously believed and that within-job pay differences remain consequential. [emphasis mine]
I mean…. This totally happens too. I’ve had it happen twice, once when I was hired in an entry level role in a bank at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this same time as a guy and despite me having a higher qualification and prior experience in the role, he was on more. The salary was apparently non-negotiable so…? And another time I was at exactly the same point as a guy in our PhD programmes and after a certain length of time the salary went up a step. He got his step a whole 6 months before me, and I still had to take my claim to HR because my direct manager refused to sign the paperwork. I also held another job where I was told women belonged in marketing and not technical roles, so despite performing the technical role for my entire employment they wanted to move me to a role I knew nothing about and which incidentally didn’t pay as much, so I quit. Another time I found the draft of the job advert for the role I was doing (PM), but I had been hired as an admin assistant and funnily enough the suggested salary was a lot higher…
It generally leaves a sour taste, and I see why women end up in lower paid roles and take time out for family… At the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this end of the day why even bother? Not to mention men face discrimination if they prioritise family, nevermind that they face worse if they try to take parental leave. Women earn less as a gender than men mostly due to how society is structured in relation to childbearing and raising, which is STILL A PROBLEM. I have always referred to it as a wealth gap, not a wage gap. In my country, we see 60+ year old single women overrepresented in those suffering poverty, for a variety of reasons.
It sure is! Look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this stats on wage theft — employers flout laws left and right, because there are seldom consequences. OP, you’re right. The “gap” is a canard. It’s been repeatedly debunked (just Google it plus the word “debunked”), but people keep repeating it for ideological reasons. The 77% figure (which is outdated) comes from a raw average of all men and women without controlling for any factors. Controlling for even a few factors shrinks the “gap” to almost nothing, and we shouldn’t assume that any study has controlled for all relevant factors. What are some of those factors that explain the “gap”? Men work longer hours than women on average, and people need more compensation to work more. Men are far more likely to be killed or maimed on the job, and people need more compensation to be willing to risk becoming disabled or dead. Notice that we never hear about the workplace fatality “gap” using that word. Nothing that goes against men is ever called a “gap.”
Lesbians earn more than straight women. Does that mean employers are biased against straight people? No, we shouldn’t leap to that conclusion based on a raw average; we should look into factors other than sexual orientation that explain it. If that applies to sexual orientation, it also applied to gender. Young women earn more than young men in big cities. If women were systematically underpaid for doing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this same work, there’d be no reason for that statistic not to be the other way around. Or the criminal system “gap” where men really are given harsher punishments for the exact same crimes. Not to mention family law. “Lifestyle choices” women couldn’t OWN BANK ACCOUNTS until 1975* (applies to Americans only). Lifestyle choices
I have seen this first hand in my industry. Anecdotally, all the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this women in my department have men “partners” who earn more than them and pay most of the bills. So, a higher salary is not much of a requirement for them. This is commonly believed but it is not correct. The wage gap persists even within the same professions and hours worked I keep hearing this statement: “Women earn 77 cents to every dollar a man makes, women make less money to do the exact same job”. Something along those lines. Gender wage gaps are calculated by taking the average (or median) female pay divided by the average male pay. It does not differentiate for same job/level/education etc, so the second part of the sentence “to do the exact same job” is not accurate based on the statistic.
I’ve worked only in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 50th Season Of Buccaneers Football 1975 2025 shirt and I will buy this finance field and I’ve had a few senior roles for a couple years now. I’ve been involved in the recruiting process for grads, junior analysts, associates etc and I’ve never actually witnessed this in the workplace. Everyone who has the same position and does the same amount of work, earns the same amount of money. I’ve actually never seen a woman making less to perform the EXACT same job before. I’m just curious as to where this statement came from? Are there other working fields where it rings true? Again, I’ve only worked in finance so I can only speak about that field. Most companies do pay male and females the same on a like-for-like basis (same job/level/education etc.) as it would be illegal to discriminate based on gender. In industries with a large gender pay gap (e.g. Finance), the wage gap is generally a result of hiring more males in senior and high paying roles.Which would account for a small number of men achieving a higher pay rate, but for the vast majority of individuals the pay will be the same (as the number of senior management roles is generally very small).
