For me it just loses a lot of the Swim Like There are Donuts at the Finish Line T-Shirt but in fact I love this magic it used to have, but a lot of that “magic” was just being ignorant to the fact that we have a pretty fucked up world. Probably has something to do with that being around the time many people are experiencing hormonal changes that make life seem extra-crazy for a few years before you get a handle on it. For me it felt like since the age of 23. Prior to that I felt like I was becoming a special person, at 23 I felt that special person, and then afterwards I just felt a shadow of my 23-year old self. When you are a kid and the world seems so big, there is always something new to learn and do. You go out and play with your friends, you learn something new in a book or on TV, your parents show you something cool, you see a random butterfly and think it’s the most badass thing ever, etc. Everything that happens is fun and interesting and unique because there’s no pattern/predictability to it.

Then you get into middle ad high school and it’s just one long routine… get up waaaayyyyy too goddamn early, go to school, phone it in for the Swim Like There are Donuts at the Finish Line T-Shirt but in fact I love this rest of the day for classes you mostly don’t care about, do whatever extracurricular stuff you signed up for, go home, do homework, your parents are too tired from work to show real interest and you think you don’t need it anyway, etc. That whole thing is on auto-play for most of the time except for when you go out with friends once in a while or whatever. Bonus points if you are in AP classes and your social life is essentially non-existant so that you can impress some shithead college acceptance advisor. It does get better once you are older and do well at your job but don’t take it sooooo goddamn seriously that it defines your whole personality (and you aren’t a shut-in who plays video games all the time and is lonely all the time because you’re too scared to take a real chance).
