They cannot use computers or email a file. It is so disturbing. I don’t even teach math or chemistry but I don’t know how those professors are managing. I’m so glad I graduated before covid. I can’t imagine going through high school and not understanding the concept of a negative. Almost none of my students can do those things. To be clear, they’re not dumb or anything, but most of my students can’t do everything on that list (minus not knowing simple shapes). Does anyone think this may be cyclical? I am Gen X, raised by boomer parents who made damn sure I knew how to read and write before I started kindergarten. I remember my father lecturing me ad nauseum (as is a father’s wont) about how his own father (silent gen?) was barely high school educated. My father graduated from college and has a graduate degree. His father found himself a trade that didn’t require a lot of education. But my parents made sure that we were well-educated and would have the cognitive tools to figure the world out on our own if we needed to. Now, Gen X or Millennials are raising these kids that you talk about with no intellectual curiosity at all, and I see them repeating what my grandfather’s generation did so many decades ago, forgo education for trades (or nowadays influencing). Will the children of Gen A (or WTFever) decide that they wont repeat what their parents did and treat education as essential as it should be? I hate to think about the complete demise of the American education system. We can’t let this happen.

Obviously a lot of speculation here, and I have to admit that even though I did benefit from a strong education system in the Support The Country You Live In The Country You Support Usa Flag shirt Also,I will get this 80s, I’m not always the brightest bulb. :/ A ton of these problems stem from teachers and administrators refusing to hold students back when “their friends are all graduating without them” and “holding them back will isolate them socially.” No one ever thinks about the damage that it will do to them academically to push them forward or how it will damage the rest of the class to put an idiot or multiple idiots in the class going forward, holding back the rest of the class from learning on their grade level because the teacher will now have to teach to the lowest students instead of focusing on the proper level.
