I hesitate to say this is uniquely American because Europe does in fact have an issue with politicians who are Trump-esque in many ways who are clearly doing fantastically. Trump isn’t engaging in debates with the other Republican hopefuls because the people who like him don’t want to see a bunch of people politely taking turns to give curated arguments on the economy and abortion. He’s holding rallies alone because the people who like him want to see the spectacle of their fav screaming and bellowing uncensored about how much everyone else sucks. It appeals to their feelings and entertains them, the way that Chris Christie and Nikki Haley talking about how they’re still tethered to reality never will. Some of his followers are also extremely unhinged conspiracy theorists who think he is promising impossible things that to my knowledge he has definitely never said, like magical tanning booths that can heal all diseases. Those people cannot be met with logic, but Donald Trump is the only kind of guy who interests them. If someone like Trump wasn’t around, those people largely wouldn’t vote because they’d be thinking “what has the government done for me lately” and go back to posting that the whole government is lizard people.

Our system and culture also means that most Republicans who do not like Trump will vote for him anyway.
