Well, glad you got it figured out OP. I am pretty familiar with how medical offices and insurance companies work, and got some advice for anyone else who is in the Some of us grew up listening Creedence cleaewater revival still do signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this same position esp regarding lab fees or billing mistakes. In this case, the doctors office clearly made the error here when sending the lab work out and not thru an insurance approved lab. You should tell the doctor that they made the mistake and that you will not pay that ridiculous fee, and suggest an alternative. If they are actually a good doctor (an honest and decent person, not a greedy crook) then they would charge the lab bill to the office/client account, which is like 20% of the normal fee, so a $200-300 lab work would only cost them $40 or something. You can tell them this fact if they still refuse or give you a hard time. And then they can change the billing charge from the patient to the office/client, and you could then pay the doctor for just the reduced fee, or not at all since technically your insurance would have covered the whole cost of the blood work normally so you shouldn’t have to pay anything.

If they say they can’t do anything about it, then they are lying and you should not accept that statement. Get angry if you have to, and fix the issue quickly and directly with them and avoid any small claims court or any secondary appeals or whatever. I have a few doctors in my family. My father is a doctor, one of the “good ones”. He still only charges $80 for a doctors visit for people without insurance, will give u a box of samples to take if you mention that scripts cost too much, and for people without insurance he will always charge their blood/lab work to the office client account so that his patients only have to pay the greatly reduced lab fee instead of the absurdly high one. You will have to wait an hour (atleast) to see him, but he spends atleast 20 min with each patient. He is very much old school. If your doctor is a greedy prick who won’t look out for you like that, then find a better doctor.
