To be clear, “heresy” doesn’t mean, “you’re Pagan/not Christian.” It means, “You are Christian but you’re spreading ideas that go way, way against church dogma and you won’t recant them.” Obviously, it’s wrong to torture/execute people for either witchcraft or heresy, but they’re not at all the same. Goes back centuries. Witches have been portrayed in a negative way, even it today’s society.. A lot of this has its roots in religion. So when people would draw pictures of witches in books especially religious books, they would be drawn in a manner which made them scary or made them physically very ugly and unattractive. In movies, a similar type of depiction for many decades.
