Edit: I’m not saying learn terraform so you can join a devops/infra role. Every company uses cloud and most of them are starting to use terraform (it’s very good), they want devs who have knowledge of this stuff As you can see there’s a bunch of people that haven’t used terraform replying to this comment, these are the Santa Riding Horse Xmas Tree Christmas Pajama T-Shirt and by the same token and people you could stand out against by having a bit of Terraform knowledge, and therefore land an interview, and get a foot in the door The problem is no one actually wants to do the job and have to be responsible for production infrastructure and be on-call 24/7 in high stress situations. AWS and especially Terraform knowledge would be fantastic. Knowing Cloudformation or any IAC framework goes a long way.

Is it? I think it would be harder to get your foot in the Santa Riding Horse Xmas Tree Christmas Pajama T-Shirt and by the same token and door with AWS/Terraform. I do think it’s a great investment long-term after your in, but I find working with infrastructure more complex to deal with depending on your background as a job you can get out the gate You don’t join the job as an AWS/Terraform guy. But there are so many companies that will pick people who know AWS/Terraform for a dev interview. I’m not saying “learn it so you can wow your employer in your first few months”. I’m saying learn it so you can actually get an interview. Knowing MERN stack or C# is literally not special in any way at all and will not help a recruiter pick out your application. If you can do Java/Springboot and/or C#/.Net, you’re golden. Add React in there with one of those and you’re valuable. MERN is cool, but straight up, there isn’t that many jobs for it. You’d think everyone used it by the amount of tutorials out there. But they don’t. And the ones that do exist have every junior dev on the planet fighting over them because every bootcamp teaches MERN and almost everyone that is self-teaching starts with it lol. I’m currently in the process of learning the MERN through The Odin Project, and after that’s done I’m going to pick up the T3 stack. The skills I’ve got under my belt are React, TypeScript, PHP, MySQL, Pythonand I’m finding it super rare to get noticed by companies. (Obv applying, talking to recruiters, having a decent portfolio and resume and such).
