I always tell them I don’t carry cash, but if they’re hungry, I’d be more than happy to buy them some food or a hot meal. Point them in the Rochester community high school class of 1986 shirt in addition I really love this direction of the closest church that has donations or food pantry most Catholics would agree to this Before they even speak, “i have nothing for ya! Best of luck.” They have gotten so aggressive around here that i dont even bother hearing them out anymore. That might sound a bit naive and unimportant but I think it’s the gesture that counts: If you have any spare food or small snacks could be anything an apple or something, just take it with you and when they approach you just tell them the truth: I’m sorry I don’t have enough money to help you that way, but maybe you can need a small amount of food or a snack, I can also just offer you an open mind and some open ears if you just want to talk to somebody or somebody that just listens to you, I am sorry that this is all I can offer but know that I tried my best

When I was working full-time I would withdraw $5 or $10 or $20 in cash from my account in singles and give that away. When it’s gone I’m done. I don’t worry about what they do with it, it’s not my place. I just give it away. “God bless” or “I don’t have anything to spare” usually does the Rochester community high school class of 1986 shirt in addition I really love this trick. If I have an unopened snack in my purse or car though, I’ll sometimes offer it if someone approaches. It might be all they eat that day. I say – no. I don’t apologize as that’s condescending and a lie – no one is really sorry they’re not giving out money I usually look them in the eye and say sorry, I don’t have cash, I would if I could. The people I run across here aren’t pushy, if I got regular pushback I would just say I’m sorry but I can’t. I haven’t lived on the streets but I’ve lived in my car or out of campgrounds and I know how lonely and dehumanizing it felt, even though I wasn’t “visibly” homeless and was working all day doing gig work, I felt very alienated from my community and very sad. So I try to show my genunine empathy, but i don’t give money like that to strangers. When I rode public transit a lot in a bigger city I carrier things like trail mix packets and crackers and gave them to people if they asked for help. I’ve left care packages with things like socks, hats, feminine hygiene etc out in downtown areas too.
