It took longer for us to decide who was going to be the fireman, to deliver the verdict. Nobody wanted to do it, so I volunteered. When the judge asked me to stand and stare whether we’d found him guilty, or not guilty, I had intended to answer calmly and clearly, but I found that I could hardly speak and I only just managed to croak “guilty”. After I sat down the judge read it that the man had 22 previous convictions for theft and violence, and had only been out of prison for two months before committing this offence. I can’t remember what his sentence was, but I do remember that he was going back inside. After we went back to the jury room, one of the women told me that “He was looking daggers at you after you said guilty”. Despite that, I was glad that I’d done my part for society. I can’t say that I exactly enjoyed the process, but it was fascinating to observe people in court and I feel, and hope, that we reached the correct decisions.

(I didn’t get picked to do the jury service itself, but when the accused swaggered in dressed in a full body, bright blue shell suit, palms facing backwards, I decided he was guilty then and there, so it’s probably just as well they didn’t pick me on middle class impartiality grounds.)
