I work for maintenance for schools. I’d be really surprised if it was up to a teacher what desk they get to use. That was a joke, your teacher sounds like she has issues then. Moving a classroom full of desks isn’t exactly 5mins work. Assuming this was true, I would guess that whoever controlled the budget to buy these has a “woodworker” friend that would make and sell them new desks. Aka, fraud. Thing is though, even if that were the case it would still have been cheaper to just keep what they already had. This doesn’t make sense. Teachers typically don’t make those kind of decisions. Place the blame on the school, principal, and the school board, who control the money and furniture choices. Yep, can confirm. I was a custodian, and the principal at the school I worked at was typically in charge of this. For example, they switched to heavier desks with ceramic chairs because students would try to throw the lighter ones (and they sucked to move lol). That being said, it could be different elsewhere, and I know sometimes teachers can make requests. She’s probably just as unhappy but she can’t rant at her students about the dickhead principal or whichever higher up at the school pushed for these stupid desks.

You can likely find a local or state statute that defines what seating should be. 99% of science classrooms I’ve seen use stools for seats. I doubt there’s any laws against seating that doesn’t include a back rest. They way these desks are built may make them unusable by people with disabilities. I’m a teacher at a school where a lot of our rooms still use the metal desks that are directly connected to a metal chair that can’t be adjusted. OP isn’t claiming this is some illegal thing violating student rights. OP just doesn’t like the new seat they have to sit in. Some things can be both legal and uncomfortable. If you are in the US and have a signed doctor’s note stating that you need a chair with proper back support for medical reasons the school must provide you with one. You could also get all the parents to call the principal/superintendent all day to complain and they will force the teacher to put them back. The squeaky wheel gets the grease!
