Meares was an eminent psychiatrist and perhaps it is because he reverse engineered this approach that it works so well. I use the analogy of waves in the ocean at the beach. The surface of the ocean is constantly agitated with ebbing and flowing waves. Underneath, though, the water is calm. My thoughts are the surface, and beneath those thoughts, it’s calm. I go “underneath’ the thoughts and when I rest there, it’s quiet and still. Some mornings for a longer time, some not as long. It is a practice. The other part of this is, I am not the thoughts. I am that which is aware of the thoughts. This awareness helps me to stay “underneath.”

When you’re physically asleep, your mind naturally shuts off perceptions in the environment. This is when we usually engage in dreams, or we’re unconscious. If you practice awareness in sleep, you can remain conscious during the silent stages in between dreams. This is a mindstate that is completely absent of internal thought and external perception. The mind goes absolutely silent.
