I think the Just a proud dad that didn’t raise liberals us flag T-Shirt also I will do this idea is that normally we literally *are* our thoughts. For example, if someone cuts you off in traffic, that might make you mad. By watching our thoughts, we are learning how to detach ourselves from them. I might still feel the pang of anger when someone cuts me off, but I don’t have to give into the anger; I can watch it and decide what to do with it (eg ignore it and let it subside, instead of dwelling on it). Guided meditation is a good way to start. Meditation is about silencing this part of your brain for a while and exploring your inner space apart from the animal brain constantly trying to plan for every possible eventuality. Another way to do it is to listen to some music, or even try to meditate with your eyes open and see the world like a baby would. With no words or thoughts. It helps to practice for small time periods at first. Don’t be hard on yourself. As the voice starts, just blow it away with a deep breath and listen to that calming sound. The mind is never quiet. That said, your mind will be MORE quiet if you do traditional silent meditation instead of using an app.

You might find this article elucidating: https://www.thedailymeditation.com/podcast/meditation-apps-not-good-not-safe-not-worth-it The mind can go completely quiet, temporarily, in a state of samadhi. This is actually fairly easy to do with a bit of practice or on a retreat. Just concentrate on something, like your breath, and when your mind wanders bring it back to that one thing. As you keep doing this your mind will get more and more still and you’ll become “absorbed” in your object of meditation. The problem with this approach is that once you get out of meditation, your thoughts come back. Someone can quite easily do concentration practices their whole life without any real lasting changes to their day to day experience (except maybe feeling a bit more calm). For that, you need insight practice, and it’s a long journey. I like to think that my mind is a classroom of Kindergarteners. For a long time the Just a proud dad that didn’t raise liberals us flag T-Shirt also I will do this class didn’t have a teacher so the children just ran around wild. With meditation I have a teacher present in the room. The children are all still there but they are more behaved having some guidance and direction. The children sometimes get a little out of hand and I have to direct their attention back to the task at hand. The children never leave and are never completely silent. But the classroom is much more organized and under control with the teacher present.
