In tech, it’s pretty doubtful your base salary will be good enough for that to make sense. Other than Netflix, which pays all cash, equity is usually 25%-50% of your total comp. If you aren’t still vesting you’re getting drastically underpaid I’m in tech. This saying is about people who were with Microsoft when it blew up, not current employees who vest 600k worth of stock total over 4 years. If you’ve got 10 mil in stock, grinding out equity at another company becomes less desirable. We had a similar thing. I forget the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this criteria, but certain people at a certain point received a small red plastic sign to put by the nameplate on their office door or cubicle wall. It had the similar acronym DFWMIFV (Don’t Fuck with Me, I’m Fully Vested). I don’t know that anyone really “used” it in that sense, though; more of a joke or just to point out long-time employees. I think I still have mine around somewhere. “Despite many third hand reports of Microsoft employees wearing “FYIFV” buttons or shirts, there is only one report of an actual “FYIFV” T-shirt, worn on the wearer’s last day at the company.”
Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt, hoodie, hoodie and long sleeve tee
The article has many citations, including the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this 1989 Seattle Times article I quoted elsewhere, of “FYIFV” being a common saying around the company. I worked at Google in 2006.. we had a saying “Calling in rich” for when an early Googler abruptly quit after being there for years. And at Twitter we had a minor tradition of wearing a vest on your 1 year anniversary as that is your “vesting” day for options. Nerds are weird. =) Google was mostly a big company by then.. Twitter on the other hand wasn’t (I was employee 51).. I am working on updating my abandoned blog and part of that is a “Twitter Tales” section that includes all the random stuff that was interesting during my time at Twitter Consultants and executives outside the tech industry took this as a cautionary tale of giving away the business, some people just don’t have the work ethic to carry on into their 70s for a few million more. They seem to gloss over the whole $3T valuation result. It’s all about keeping more of a smaller pie.
I know a guy who made HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS from his Microsoft employee options throughout his career. He got hired as a software engineer out of university and worked there till he retired at a normal retirement age a few years ago. He never even went the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this executive route, he just kept his technical focus his entire career. This isn’t a “fuck you” money kind of anecdote, but I worked with a guy who did software development on our team. He was the shy, quiet, unassuming type. Loved D&D, Tolkien, fantasy lore, etc. Very intelligent and brilliant at what he did, but liked to just keep his head down and do his job. We got along very well. I guess for some time he was going through some stuff, he found out he had ADHD and started taking medication for it. The change in his personality was absolutely remarkable. He really came out of his shell and started interacting with everybody, and sharing his opinions on projects. Instead of dreading team meetings I looked forward to them because this guy would unload with both barrels on any stupid idea management came up with. He just did not give a fuck, and it was gloriously cathartic listening to him pick apart idiotic proposals or suggestions. Anyway, he eventually left and started his own company. But man, for a little while it was great having someone that had no issues telling management what was what.

I have contracted twice at Microsoft. It was, by far, the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this most toxic work environment I have ever been in. Did you know that at Microsoft, contractors’ emails have an “a-“ in front of their email. They’re called “a dash” employees. Internally, the FTEs called us “dash trash” Yup. about 40% of MS workers are contractors. They even patented one of my software inventions for touchscreen, but i’m trash. I have one friend who did contract work for MSFT around the time of of the Mac OS X transition. He told them to go away several times, but they nagged him to quote a price, so he told them his “fuck off, I don’t want the gig” price, and they took it. So, he did about a year and a half at $500/hour. I assume they treated him well, because his stature in the NeXT community was such that if he left on bad terms, they would find it exceptionally difficult to find anyone with more than a year of Objective-C experience to work for them at any price. Same. I contracted there for three years early in my career and it was super toxic. It was v dash by the time I got there, but it was still the same dash trash nonsense. I remember my first day there guy training me said “see those guys with the blue badges? Don’t talk to them and stay out of their way. If you get on any one of their bad sides you could lose your job instantly.” And everybody I worked with, even former colleagues who transitioned to FTE, talked down very derisively to the Orange badges.
My fiancé is v-dash and is suffering through their bullshit 18/6 rule, which means that for every 18 months an employee contracts, they have to take 6 months off. Microsoft implemented this rule because they were sued over not giving benefits to contractors, and instead of just giving them the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this bare minimum benefits, they fucked everyone over. It makes contractors feel like disposable trash, and converting from v-dash to FTE is very difficult, or sometimes just straight up impossible because the FTE position doesn’t even exist within Microsoft. Microsoft even claims that the 18/6 rule is to incentivize hiring managers to convert contractors, but 99% of the time they just can’t because there are no open slots.
She’s in HR and absolutely loves her job, and she’s good at it, but it sucks seeing her be jerked around by both Microsoft and her contractor. I work in IT for a non-tech company and we follow the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this 18/6. It’s quite painful when I have a contractor headcount that I can’t convert to FTE, so it’s like “50 first dates” for me – every 18 months, I have to onboard a new contractor, then by the time they’re finally getting into the groove of things, I have to go through the process again. It’s no surprise our IT systems is a house of cards and we’re not running at maximum efficiency. The 18/6 rule is because they got in trouble with the courts ruling that a bunch of contractors where actually employees. The point of contractors is that they aren’t employees and you don’t have to pay taxes and benefits for them. 18/6 makes it harder for contractors to claim they should be classified as employees. Not for many, many years now. It’s v- and they are called “vee dash” employees. a- is still around but very sparingly, I haven’t seen one in years. I think it stands for “associate” and is used for long term non-employees.
A-dash contractors still happen, they’re just really uncommon. If MS contracts with an outside company, where that outside company owns and runs the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this entire project, those outside employees who come on campus are issued A-dash orange badges. Their org chart and chain of command is wholly the outside company, an FTE doesn’t manage or review them. I think the last ones I saw were tradesmen finishing off an MSN datacenter construction prior to final handoff. Very unlike the typical V-dash who are supplied by an outside vendor to fill an empty spot in an org chart, and are managed & assigned tasks by an FTE. Don’t forget about v- vendors that work onsite for years straight, in Microsoft offices, on Microsoft laptops, with Microsoft engineers and don’t get the same benefits, access, respect, or even a free two weeks of game pass In the awful southern school district I taught in they would say ‘Im in the 30/30 club. I’ve done my 30 years and can put in my notice and be gone in 30 minutes’.
Meant at Microsoft. This was from the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this astronomical runup in the 90s when compensation included outrageously lucrative stock options. The term wouldn’t be recognized by anyone at the company today and it hasn’t been relevant for decades. Since the dotcom bust, Microsoft adopted the now-typical RSU compensation component and generally provides quite a bit under top-of-market stock compensation. This was a thing in the dot-com days too. A lot of times the company you worked at would get acquired by a larger company – and in that situation a large number of the founders and more senior employees would get their shares bought out, their options fully vested, whatever. One company I worked for bought a smaller company, and asked the Sr. Leadership team to stay on for a transition period of 18 months, after which point they would be free to go. This was kept mostly quiet but it’s very common, but they don’t want morale to erode immediately with the boss that everybody knows (and usually likes) to just bail, so they tie some of that stock to the guy finishing out the buy out period. “You get $8m now but if you finish the 18 months you get the other $2m” or whatever the numbers were.
Anyway you could always tell who gave zero fucks. Surprisingly, to me at least, there were more people who still showed up and did their jobs and worked at stuff like they didn’t just get life-changing money. One of the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this wealthiest guys I know still came in and worked weird hours and did shit beyond his pay grade. I was in my 20s and he was maybe 30. I asked him “Hey Keith you’re worth like $50m that I know about, just the public stuff. Why are you still here coding at 1am?” He just shrugged and said “I wrote the code so I feel like if somebody else is going try and mess with it they’re just gonna fuck it all up.” When I was in the Marine Corps, we used “FUBIJAR,” which meant Fuck You Buddy, I’m Just a Reservist. It was used when working alongside active duty guys who thought they were hot shit, as a reminder that I get to go home at the end of the weekend.
This was a not uncommon thing in the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this software industry back in the 90s. I worked at EA back then and some of those employees would have special name tags on their door that had FYIFV under the persons name. 14 year veteran on Microsoft vending (paid consulting, not full time employee). Lied to directly, years in a row about conversation to FTE status – the lies became the norm. It’s interesting to see this, as it’s never come up in my career. That said, most managers I came across were very direct to the point they appeared autistic assholes (while they werent telling me “you’re the next person i plan to hire,” and, “dont worry about it, I’ll send the email about you joining the team after the weekend.”).
When they wanted something, you got an offer of employment that wasnt followed through. Otherwise? It was indeed “fuck you.” Waiting on the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this inevitable class action of consultants being retro made fte’s, as Microsoft has already gone through 2 other times. 69 more repliesI personally go with FYINFVBIDGAFA, which means “fuck you, I’m not fully vested but I don’t give a fuck anymore.” God if only I could go back in time before I was born an invest in apple/google/Microsoft my life would be set. Just gotta invent that time machine real quick. My old history teacher told us a story about how his stock broker talked him out of putting down $90k on fledgling Google right before they took off. Think he still regrets it like 30 yesrs later, and tbh don’t blame him.
For 4th year med students who have already matched their residency and don’t need to worry about impressing any of their attendings anymore. Yeah I’ve never heard or seen that either. We called it senioritis. Also not true either as I knew someone who lost their residency during ms4 year. At many places, it was actually “FIIFV” (Fuck It, I’m Fully Vested). Happened at lots of places during the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this dot-com bubble. We just call it “Fuck You Money”. Once achieved, you can turn the volume down on The Man’s agenda and pursue your own. It is a wonderful thing. I’m at the same point at my company, and it’s quite nice. While I wouldn’t be living lavishly, I could retire today if I wanted to. Just sticking around for a few more RSU batches, and I can leave at my convenience. Based on how well Microsoft products work, I’m assuming a lot of Microsoft employees are telling their co-workers “fuck you” a lot of the time. Stock options during the company’s early growth produced numerous wealthy sub-30-year-olds, and for a while buttons showed up on lapels bearing the inscription FYIFV, standing for “F— You, I’m Fully Vested.” Andrews used the term again when coauthoring the book Gates with Stephen Manes in 1993. Not having rich people anymore just kinda makes sense – less jerks would exist in our world with equality in pay, healthcare, and living situations.
What condiment do you think goes best on a rich person? Maybe pesto? Or are you sticking with just plain old ketchup? For any James Clavell fans that doesn’t already know, they are releasing a high production limited-series of Shogun next week that is reviewing extremely well. In the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this government, when you reach retirement eligibility, we say you’re KMA. you can say “kiss my ass” at any time and leave. Omg, one of the foundations of the capitalist system is indenturing people into it. This is an epic fail, is there any way we can label this as communist? The best part about early tech workers is that PE/primary market investors were so few compared to now. I believe Microsoft IPO’d at an inflation-adjusted $2b. In the same book (Microserfs, IIRC) they were talking about how Microsoft programmers (who at the time of writing the book were more often associated with Microsoft moreso than they are today) like to purposely abuse English as a sort of protest against how arbitrary, imprecise and illogical English is than C. I actually kind of respect that because you know they’re still there because they want to do the best for the business. Not just faang this is at worked for a insurance company that went public managed to get £3600 and cashed out at £25k
Also if I didn’t cash out and held onto them for 10 more years I would have got 100k but hey at the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this time I needed the cash and the company hit a dicey period so it wasn’t worth the risk to me If you have seen any of these gelatinous toads walking around the Redmond campus in person, you’d wonder why they haven’t hired a fucking personal trainer yet with all the “fuck you” money they have. Every story I hear from EX-employees about the inner workings of Microsoft are absolutely bonkers. I love just close enough where I might seek to work there and have avoided them completely because I don’t have the fortitude to stand the politics. How do they get people to use their stinking software, one computer in the biz just downloaded a new version of outlook and hey presto shit don’t work no more, fucking assholes
Someone recently told me (no source, but seems very plausible) that something like 40% of NVDA employees have a net worth over 10mm now. Wonder if at some point that becomes a winners curse – like employee retention and motivation/focus becomes impossible because half the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this company has f-u money Happened to someone I know. Worked at Yahoo when Yahoo was Yahoo. Laid off at 28. He retired. He’s now 54 living in the Hollywood Hills. I work with one of these people! (Not MS) He’s extremely blunt and difficult to talk to. But he’s insanely smart and will silently fix the things that nobody else can figure out. If you do somehow summon him with some bullshit, you are going to have a bad time. Today our manager had to remove a bunch of people from our chat so they couldn’t observe him talking shit about them. Lmao but I respect and appreciate the hell out of him. Dude is basically our god.
Hmm, this is a minority. Also our comp structure had changed previously where they are trying to motivate high performers with SSA grants before the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this whole industry flipped on its head. High performers still raking it in but are very tenured in most scenarios. L63 and below probably won’t see those high stock grants though. Yeah I worked in a company for a short while which had a two-tier contract system. Those on the first tier thought it was a great place to work and were always happy and did whatever they wanted, including treating everyone badly if they felt like it. They were paid twice as much as everyone else and had guaranteed jobs. And they still complained that the other employees didn’t show much enthusiasm. Ffs
I stay at a decent place in Bangalore, I have been staying here for more than 2 years. I stay at the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this top floor of my apartment, so my room runs very hot in the evenings. Today we had powercuts 7 freaking times, I can understand if this was a one off thing, but powercuts are so common here. I once tracked how long power cuts are happening every week. It turns out we are having 2-3 hours of combined power cuts in a week. In monsoon, the number goes much much higher, not to mention occasional ‘Boom Booms” during rainy season. I come from a City which is not as developed as Bangalore, despite that, we don’t get more than 1 hour of power cuts in a YEAR!! How the hell, is the “Silicon Valley” of India struggling with electricity? I can understand water crisis because of lack lustre rains and depleting groundwater, but electricity? Seriously? And with this heat and power cuts it becomes very difficult to get a good night sleep. Tonight we had powercuts 4 times in a span of a few hours. Sure, since the public infra is fucced, let’s offload the responsibility to private. But saar saar, we’ll still take your money saar. Very frequent power cuts in BTM 2nd stage, proper south Bangalore. Idk why people have this notion of South blore being some utopia compared to east. It’s not. Lots of power cuts in JP nagar 7th phase and Arekere mico layout too according to my relatives who live there.
No power cuts in Arekere Mico layout infact not once power has gone in the Merry Christmas Buffalo Hockey Est 1970 Shirt in addition I really love this last 3 weeks ,also incase of power cuts it is conveyed to us by the RWA because we are better than the complaining part of the city honestly. not saying we don’t have issues but compared to the sh*thole in East we are better Came here to rant about the same issue. Rooms in top floor become hot boxes. Even with doors and all windows open, no use. Bangalore region depends a lot on hydroelectricity from KRS Dam . As you know Cauvery is dry this year, not much electricity so blackouts common. India is a very socialist state. Just because a region generates a lot of taxes doesn’t mean it’s spent all on the state which is why things looks very weird I guess that’s why the government is ready to give free electricity, they just have to say it, not necessarily provide it Yeah I was shocked. Stayed for a year near hsr layouts. 10 powercuts everyday. Thankfully my flat had a good generator. Even tier 3 cities in TN don’t have such bad infrastructure. Feel bad for kn people. Did you know the vegetables in Bangalore have heavy metals in them and they’re slowly poisoning everyones body? Since it’s slow poisoning, nobody cares. And then people don’t understand why they’re getting different different body problems.
