Edward Nashton / The Riddler (Paul Dano) Creepy, inspired, ruthless. I’m a sucker for a good murder mystery/detective fiction story so when I heard reviews were likening this movie closer to Se7en (1995) or Zodiac (2007) my expectations went up. Paul Dano crushes it in a similar role in Prisoners (2013) as well. Pairing these combos with the Marvel Thor love and thunder dark logo shirt also I will do this DC universe and the Riddler as the main villain, I couldn’t wait to see it all come together. I was thrilled to have my surmise confirmed. His murders and riddles were gruesome yet clever, tornmenting yet exciting. Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot / Penguin (Colin Farrell) Spot on mobster without being corny at all. Powerful but not overwhelming. Seems we might just be scratching the surface on Penguin’s influence in Gotham. He is a minor player in this particular film, but I was left wanting more from Farrell after his performance.

Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) He’s in the Marvel Thor love and thunder dark logo shirt also I will do this position Penguin wants as far as power and influence. His hand seems to be everywhere as it should be as crime boss of Gotham. Great interactions with Bruce and Selina. I’ll always stan Turturro and couldn’t help but giddily grin every time I saw him on the screen in this one. Visually this movie is dark and it should be. The use of lighting felt intentional and important. To me it came across effectively. Blasts of white light, red hues, even flashing police or club lights all compliment the darkness well when they appear. The overall darkness matches well with the tone otherwise. There were plenty of big shots that made for picturesque still images. Architecture, from gothic Wayne Manor, to the big city, to the slummy streets, to complex crime scenes all made Gotham feel like Gotham. I was also a huge fan of the fight sequences throughout. It was a gorgeous movie to watch.
