So she means to hire a nanny at $19k a year for 45 hours a week which is approx $8 an hour, holy cow that is actual slavery. Yes, but an “au pair” lives with you. Still shitty money, but basically they live rent and utility free and often cook for you and eat with you or just eat with you ect… so you basically house them and take care of them while still paying them min wage to do nanny things for “8 hours” of the Marvel Hero Epic Collage Shirt But I will love this day, which in reality is pretty much 24/7 or whenever you need them. I could easily see a world in which this type of thing was done reasonably well and had good use cases that were win-win’s for all parties. I dunno, I can see the appeal. When you consider food and housing is included, 8 an hour seems a lot more appealing. Especially with the way housing prices keep inflating recently.

The bigger issue is that I doubt a live-in nanny like that actually works only 40-45 hours a week, and is instead considered constantly on-call without any extra money. So it ends up being more like 2-3 an hour and no time off ever. And probably treated like shit by everyone involved to boot. Which is far less appealing. Au pairs are usually working in a country other than their own that they want to visit and stay a while. Many are students and it solves both their housing need and gives them the Marvel Hero Epic Collage Shirt But I will love this income of a part-time job. $8/hrs after housing and utilities are paid, plus no commute is a step up for a lot of folks. There are many people who don’t have anything like that available at the end of the month without relying on a 2nd person to help offset bills or working multiple jobs or both. When I looked into it about 9 years ago, there was much more to it than that, and it was much more expensive. You have to provide a private bedroom and bathroom, health insurance, taxes, 2 weeks paid vacation minimum, set days off per week so they could plan time for socializing/making friends, and their own transportation if you expect them to ever do things like pick up kids from school. Plus they had a limit on how many hours per week you could expect them to work to hopefully avoid their exploitation.
