Ironically, I got a D on the Living With A Finn Builds Character shirt and I will buy this project. That week just so happened to land on a week where I was in the school play sat/Sunday night and my mom (fake kid’s grandma) said she’d care for it while I was on stage. I remember when I was in school we had a girl who kept talking about how much she wanted to have a baby, well when that section came and the permission slips went home her parents reached out to the teacher and told them to make her suffer. The dolls have different settings that can be adjusted for how calm/fussy the doll will be. They put hers on hell mode. We had some that simulated babies with issues with things like fetal alcohol syndrome, colic, drug withdrawal, etc. All options were turned on and set to max. The first day she was so excited to get her baby to take home by the 3rd day she was starting to look awful and stressed, by Friday she was exhausted and was seriously reconsidering how much she wanted a baby. It also didn’t help that all of her other teachers were giving her zero slack about dealing with said demon doll. It was a miserable week for everyone around her for having to listen to that doll screaming all the time but it was worth it since IIRC she hadn’t had a kid by the time I left.

My high school aged son brought one of those Baby Shriek and Screams home for the Living With A Finn Builds Character shirt and I will buy this weekend on a class assignment. The accursed thing went off every fifteen minutes all night long no matter what we did until I finally went in, confiscated it from him, and threw it in freezer in the laundry room to shut it up. I’m absolutely convinced they invented those things to remind menopausal women longing for “grandbabies” what they’re in for if little Kayleigh comes home from 10th grade preggers. I never had to do this. I saw kids have to do this in other classes, but none of the classes I had made me do it. The thing is, even adults don’t comprehend that a baby turns into toddler, and then turns into an adult, and is a LIFELONG commitment.

My high school in ’98-’02 had these things. I’m pretty sure each person only had to do a night or 2 each, but unlucky people had HORROR STORIES of these babies. They were heavy like a real baby and would cry spontaneously, always needing something different- sometimes to be burped and you needed to pat its back just right, sometimes a bottle, or diaper change. It wouldn’t stop crying until its specific need was met. If you ignored the cries they got louder, and if you completely ignored it a report would tell the teacher when she would plug the baby into a little handheld. Your final grade for the Baby Think It Over unit would reflect how badly your baby got treated. If you accidentally dropped its head back, or shook the baby it was an absolutely HORRIBLE scream cry. Sometimes it happened to people during school and it was louudddd. Some people’s babies never cried during the night, but some babies kept people up all night with the crying. My older sister got a bad baby and this thing would not stop crying, we’re talking like every 30 minutes. She had a calc test the next day so at one point she just lost it and was crying and threw it from the top of the stairs. I remember seeing her head down the stairs after it at like 2am knowing she was about to go break the fake baby until it couldn’t keep her awake anymore, extremely entertaining for 14 year old me. Students knew beforehand if they broke the fake baby they would have to pay to replace it, and the alternative to doing the baby thing was a research paper which no one ever wanted to do. My mom found the baby in the kitchen in the morning doing these faint, fucked up robotic noises. My sister had to bring the broken baby into school the next day and it was like $250 to replace. 2 years later I had to do the same thing but I got a good baby, it barely cried.
I had one of these at school.
