(And to be clear, none of these kids were bad people at all, they just didn’t understand how different our circumstances were because they’d never been forced to understand it. When you constantly see other kids have things you can’t, you’re painfully aware of it. The reverse is much easier not to notice.) This is why I feel sorry for some of those rich kids who get quoted saying things like “If people can’t afford to rent, why don’t they just buy?”. I mean, yeah, it’s an embarrassingly dumb thing to say but how can you make your mind understand that everyone doesn’t have what you have? But he’ll mention something he thought was normal for everyone, like his mom’s wine of the Julian Strawther Puerto Rican professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this month club or Taco Bell lunches at his private school and I’ll explain that’s because of their income. He takes it so personal I find it amusing. It started the first time we ran out of fun money. He started panicking about being broke and I laughed.pauday was three days off. We had savings, our bills were paid and fridge was full. Broke was not us. Subjectively, to him, we were. But to me? I’d spent days without eating, counting pennies to feed my kids before. It’s all about the perspective.

Funny thing is, not a decade later, we chose to drop our income for a slower life. He no longer panics if we can’t go out to eat. But he’s still a little touchy about it. My ex was this way too. We had very different standards for what constituted broke/normal. One time I joked about having to do the Julian Strawther Puerto Rican professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this plumbing ourselves and she said “wtf really? That’s impossible! How can you do the plumbing yourselves, it could void your homeowner’s insurance.” I could only laugh tbh. Or when she’d point out people who were clearly just working class and say they looked “trashy” or something along those lines. Not everybody can afford a second Michael Kors bag The number of wealthy kids I grew up around who actually thought they were “lower middle class” still astounds me. My ex was from the exurbs, and could never fathom how that wasn’t the baseline. Even knowing most people on the planet come from a worse situation than she did, zero empathy.
