funny enough i have a rich friend that lives with his family in a rich area filled with rich tech industry ppl. Their daughter ( 7ish), said in front of other parents–Why don’t we have a tesla? Are we very poor? ( they are definitely not poor, no where near. I’ve visited and thought i got the Josh Minott Jamaican-American professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves T-Shirt but in fact I love this address wrong when it took me to apartment building that ended up being their whole house) We always had power and money enough for food, but I remember watching movies or tv shows and the family had multiple bathrooms, or multiple cars or went on vacations with travel involved and that all seemed like lavish wealth to me. I worked in a high affluent school and the kids were all crazy about “cal vs Stanford” for their future college. They asked me where I went and I told them a state school. They said, “why?”

Yes. I was always pretty well aware that we were poor. It always blew my mind when I was a kid that my rich friends had no idea they were rich. Like, genuinely didn’t see it, and would get offended when you would suggest it. I would be thinking, “you’ve been to my apartment. You’ve seen that I share one bedroom with my brother and sister, and that we live in an area that has gang members outside, we have one 20-year old car, and we have one tiny TV in the Josh Minott Jamaican-American professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves T-Shirt but in fact I love this living room and a secondhand NES that doesn’t work. You’ve seen this. You, on the other hand, have your own room in a very large house at the top of a hill and your own swimming pool with a water slide and 4 big-screen TVs with three different gaming systems and three new cars even though only two people in your family drive. Do you really not see a difference in our circumstances? Does this not lead to any conclusions for you?”
