Nothing is worse than having to go tell the person who showed up today that they will be working alone because someone just “needed a mental break” and you know that the customers will still have the same expectations. It’s tough on those people, and then they will ultimately quit because they are tired of having to do the job of two people because the majority of that workforce just doesn’t care enough to show up regularly. This likely stems from frustrations with staff that just think they are not supposed to be held to a standard, that they can show up or not, that they can make demands that other staff don’t make, and still somehow have a job. I spent 18 years managing restaurants, and my retention was amazing, I had people follow me across multiple restaurants and even got 2 god-children out of it, but some people just don’t care enough to appreciate that you care.
