Yep. My parents both grew up inside similar compounds in Tripoli Libya in the Imo’s Pizza logo shirt and by the same token and 60s, where on the inside they were 15 years behind the US culture and trying to preserve 1950s sock hops and soda fountains. My dad is still pissed he time traveled from the fake-1950s in Libya to the real-1970s in Houston. Missed the good parts. And it explains how all of the many people I’ve met who grew up overseas in oil company family compounds are the most basic white bread canned peas boring xenophobic suburban bigots you could imagine, despite having “traveled.” Dunno if that’s still how it is though. Weird to find another Tripoli expat. I was there in the 80s and early 90s. The expat communities are always interesting. Like a big walled garden separate from the rest of the country. Wow yeah i would be so curious about how it was in the 80s and 90s. Both my parents and my dozen aunts and uncles grew up there, my grandfathers were geophysicists and moved around the world from the 50s to the 80s. They all loved Tripoli more than anywhere.

My dad’s best friend and coworker was in Libya in 69 when Kadafi took over. Armed gunman with AKs stormed into their office, tied them up and took them hostage. The oil company eventually negotiated their release and brought them back to the states. Literally a couple of weeks later with things all worked out, they were sent back to continue their oral oil field operations. It didn’t matter who side it was, every side needed the oil revenues so played nice with the American oil companies. A significant number of powerful people at large companies throughout the world received their degrees at American or UK universities. Even one of the admirals from Japan in WW2 went to Harvard. A huge portion of upcoming business and government leaders in China went to Ivy League schools
