There’s a saying about working/living in Saudi Arabia, especially as someone who isn’t Muslim. I forget if I read it somewhere on reddit or if one of my friends mentioned it to me while I was living there. It goes like this. When you arrive in Saudi Arabia you have two buckets: one for money and one for shit. Whenever one of those buckets is full, that’s when it’s time to leave. Thats just military/contracting speak it was what guys who could retire but havent chosen when they want to drop papers say I have no idea what that means. I suppose I could fill a bucket with shit in 3-4 weeks. Is the I Only Wanted 10 Chickens But If God Wants Me To Have 20 Vintage T-Shirt and I love this saying trying to say “don’t stay more than a few weeks”? I think they mean “shit” in a metaphorical sense, not a literal one. Like, leave when you have all the money you need, or when you say “I can’t take this shit anymore.” 30 years ago, my friend’s dad lived in KSA. My friend would FedEx him VHS tapes of NFL games, so he could watch them a few days later. The packages were always opened – someone was watching to make sure it wasn’t – anti-government news? Porn? Who knows? His dad said it was awful, like living in a luxury prison, but he made bank for a 2- year stint there. The luxurious amenities were in need of repair and upkeep while I was there. Granted, I left there 23 years ago. I worked in Saudi for 3 months, out in the middle of nowhere. But nights where I was flying in or out I stayed in a compound. I’d go out into town and have a Krispy Kreme donut at a cafe, check out the chevvy’s they had on display on the high street, maybe treat myself to something from the massive Adidas store… felt like any normal city… Then had to walk past the machine gun turrets and around the anti-ram-raid barricades to get back in to the compound

Idk when you were here but most of the I Only Wanted 10 Chickens But If God Wants Me To Have 20 Vintage T-Shirt and I love this turrets are gone now. I used to have turrets at my old compound too but they disappeared around 2016 ish or so A girl I knew from Canada lived out there when her dad went there for work. Her house was a big concrete compound lol. She had to use a VPN to access most sites, because the government blocks everything. Even rabb.it was blocked, if anyone remembers that site. Funny story is the maid they had working for them there randomly ran away one day and got asylum in the UK I believe. My uncle lives im one of them. I could never do it. Any country that still publicly beheads people and crucifies the bodies is not a country I want anything to do with. My old friend from high school lived in one of places for a couple years. She met her now Saudi husband at a prestigious university. The hoops she had to go through to marry him from the Saudi and US government was ridiculous. They now live here in the USA. 15-20 years ago I worked on the saudi-aramco retirement plans. Most of the guys would call in just to talk about their pension calculation because they had millions in their retirement accounts but not a whole bunch of entertainment to occupy their time. When The Kingdom came out I was like- oh shoot! it’s the pension guys! UAE, Saudi, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar and several other countries all have large American expat communities, with a lot of oil, state department, military, journalists, educators, and finance workers. They’re not all walled off but are often in insulated expat neighborhoods and the schools and larger employer campuses are often walled off campuses. My parents lived there for years (Americans). They would make their own liquor and wine with their neighbors, Saudi nationals were not allowed inside the compounds. They met a lot of nice people from all over the Middle East + SE Asia but overall hated their life there and left. Companies would offer outrageous salaries to come back to my father, but he declined because of the overall poor quality of life and isolation the 18’ barbed wire fences brought.
