It compares earnings of men broadly to earnings of women broadly without controlling for factors such as hours worked or type of job worked, and men are more likely to go into higher paying higher stress environments so they just make more broadly speaking. Men are also going to be working more hours, and they don’t have maternity leave so they aren’t having that time off work either Women who have children are affected by this in greater numbers. Earnings or pay disparities exist in all fields to some degree, but those differences aren’t as vast when women don’t have children. Add on the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this fact that the United States has no national paid family leave policy like most of the Western world, and you’re left with a society that values work over health. It’s really confusing and annoying when you research how other countries afford to pay for things like healthcare for its people because when it comes to the U.S., Republicans in particular, lack the political will needed to implement these vital changes.

Women generally earn less (in a lifetime) due to taking time out of their work to start/raise a family more often they do this than the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this male does. This gets ignored in a lot of the wage gap conversations and the myth of employer based sexist policies continues. That an average men earns more than an average women in itself is not a problem, as this comes highly likely from priorities in the selection of job (i want to earn vs i want a job that makes me happy) as well as part time work which is much higher with women and thus creates a cut in pay as well as if you stop working for 10 years and having an work experiecne gap. It is only a problem when a female doctor and a male doctor with similar position, similar experience and education have not the same wage, which is even illegal in a lot of countries. I think these comparisons are across the entirety and not comparing apples with apples. I work as teacher and all pay scales apply to everyone there is no gender differences.
Women are more likely to take time off to raise kids, that’s around ten years or so of no income. Women are also much much more likely to work as teachers and social workers which pays poorly compared to men who are more likely to work in finance and sales. Per hour and flat salary they get paid the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this same for the same job. I mean men work longer hours on average at the same job . Things like world soccer where womans soccer brings in millions and mens soccer brings in billions is another information travesty. Step 2: Realize that pay disparity between CEO’s and ground level workers is way more than anything else that people want to distract you with. Anecdotal but I’ve seen that men prioritize salary way, waaaaay above the rest of the points. So much that men would go and work on oil rigs, mines and other hazardous environments just for money. Many will work for companies that throw money but also suck souls out of their employees. Many will work under a terrible boss, tell themselves that they will do it only for a year or so because the money is good. Far fewer women do the same. That’s also why women tend to be more satisfied, less stressed than men with their jobs. a lot of people talking here with only a half understanding of what it means. the study that originally showed that stated that when you look at men and women working the same position for similar amounts of time working similar amounts of ours, would have the women earning 77% of what the men make. recently people have started to argue this was a study about all men and all women in the work force which isn’t true (other studies have been done this way but not the 77¢ per dollar one)

if there were actually a study going across all earnings of men to all earnings of woman it would likely be a significantly bigger gap as 68% of ceos are men For older generations it used to be true but for college age people it’s actually starting to go the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this other way. What immediately comes to mind is labor, construction, physical jobs wherr employers do have room to differentially pay employees based on their sex/gender. There are published results of pay inequity from across the world detailing results that you can access for free from the UN library. Economist here. The first part is true the second part is a lie. On average women make less than men for a variety of reasons. The main reasons are job title, years of experience, and hours worked. About 2% is unexplained and could be discrimination or something else we haven’t considered. Some people (rightly or wrongly) have argued those others reasons above are also discrimination because women are less likely to get promoted (job title), drop out of the job market to raise kids (years of experience), and spend more time on childcare (hours worked). In the video I saw, they went one step further and analyzed college education as well. Where they found out that degrees with higher paying jobs were mostly comprising of men and otoh degrees with lower paying jobs were mostly comprising of women In my experience companies don’t actually offer us what they’re willing to pay us. Some people are very confident and willing to negotiate up their salaries. other people are not. At my gfs company they found they were underpaying asian employees, probably for that reason. A correlation between personality types with other factors can definitely contribute to such a gap. If men are more likely to have a personality type that is aggressive and confident, then they’d be more likely to get paid more for example.
It’s important to note the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this 77 cents pay gap is not the one the above explains. The pay gap is much smaller when you consider both the jobs people have and gaps in working for child raising. The only place things like this are likely to happen are small businesses. Ive got 2 friends who used to work at a local pizza place. They were told to not discuss wages. One friend, a small latina, had worked there for a year or 2. Then my other friend, a big white dude started working there. After some time, he had casually mentioned his paycheck to her anger. Despite working there longer, she was being payed less. That boss is an absolute prick though. Everyone hates him Idk how it is where you folks are, but what I see and hear most often in Canada is that you need to be assertive in pay negotiations and women rarely are. We’re socialized to not be, and so even when we try to be, it’s rarely as solid. This also applies to asking for raises, with women doing it less often as less effectively. So let’s say starting wage was $18-$24/hr and by chance they hire 5 men and 5 women for this position. Behaving as above, 2 women take $18, 2 take $20, 1 takes $22. For the men, let’s say 2 take $18, 1 takes $20, 1 $22, and 1 $24. Clearly, men are already making more. 6 months in, 3 of the men are confident (socialized behaviour) and itemize their achievements (duck-to-water socialized male way of presenting information rather than, say, hoping like a woman people will notice what they’ve done) and point out extra work they’ve put in (often because they can and often the women’s home responsibilities make it that they ‘can’t’ in equal measure, else theyre labelled uncaring children, bad partners, terrible mothers, absentee friends…) and those guys each get a $1/hr bump. Contract negotiations come up at a year, pattern generally continues. Remember, if she takes maternity leave, she probably looses a whole cycle of potential increase. If he takes leave, it’s probably shorter, more like a long vacation, and he doesn’t lose out on that. Actually, he also is seen as oh-so-progressive and supportive and people notice he now ‘has more mouths to feed’ and might give him a bump. For her, it’s taken as par for the course, and people worry how often she’ll take days off because kid is sick or cut out early for a doctor’s appointment (even if she will make it up later). The framing is different. And the gap often widens over time.
As I said, not everywhere, I’m sure. Not all the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this time, I’m sure. But this is what I see and hear often. And of course, we often get mansplained at to ‘just’ do what the guys are doing, as though our conditioned softness will disappear overnight and we won’t just be labelled btchs for it. I think the term got twisted into what you heard. The study is that they do make less. But not doing the exact same job. They tend to make less because they pick fields that make less (RN, Teacher, Psychologist, etc.) At least, that’s my understanding. I work in an industry that is very liberal and diverse (thankfully) and see women and men making very equal levels of pay for the same job. People using stats incorrectly. I’m not sure if it still rings true to the number but I do believe median pay was at some point .76:1. However, that never was talking about people doing the same job just what the genders were earning compared to each other. I vaguely remember reading a number of something like .95-.98:1 when normalized for career choice, hours worked, OT hours worked, leave taken, etc. The gender pay gap is a combination of actual sexism in pay, careers and career advancement, that sexism being increasingly a historical artifact but which still impacts the compensation of older generations, disparities between the careers that men and women choose to pursue and disparities in how men and women approach work life balance in general.
Add in some bad math chosen for inflammatory feminist rhetoric rather than a true account of sexist pay discrimination and you have the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this Gender Pay Gap. The more you account for other variables, the more the gap shrinks. View it generationally and it is clear that the gap is reversing for the younger generations. When we calculate the Gender Pay Gap as a basic raw difference between the total earnings of each gender, it would be weird if the gender who works more, works harder and takes bigger risks didn’t also earn more. Nowadays, higher education is completely dominated by women, though engineering fields continue to be a primarily male field of interest. With this we are already seeing a reversal of traditionally male high earning professions.
The largest roadblock will continue to be that many women do still want to have kids and they actually want to raise them rather than pay someone else, which imposes a costly career gap. The wage gap is real, but the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this 77 cents on the dollar is flawed. They got that number from taking the entire work forces for both genders and getting the average. In high paying executive jobs and stem Jobs, there is a huge disparity since historically women didn’t take those jobs. Thankfully that is changing. But if you were to isolate hospitality, and other jobs where the genders are about equal, the pay is about equal as well Most of the difference comes from industry selection and experience. Studies that claim the “77%” figure claim to take this into account but that is a lie. The real difference is more like 6%, and that can mostly be attributed to men asking for more during the negotiation phase of the interview, whereas women are more likely to just accept the first offer and not make a higher counter-offer.
I asked my boss once why my colleague, a man, was making more than me and he said “Well, he’s got a family to support”. I don’t know if that was sexism or just discrimination against a single person with no kids. Not sure if it’s the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this same now and it’s definately was illegal back then but that didn’t stop employers asking if I had family or a boyfriend (trying to figure out if I was going to be popping out kids anytime soon / maternity pay) .. You can get passed over for roles for lots of reasons but if an employer thinks you’ll be off on maternity leave soon, they won’t hire you. My mum’s generation (born in 1966) had to take pregnancy tests as part of the routine screening for factory jobs.
Women still tend to be the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this primary caregivers, it’s usually the woman (and makes financial sense if shes the lower earner) is the one to be off when deciding to take parental leave for children, so a womens career can take a bit of a stall. Added to that it’s usually the female who takes time off / part time work for elderly care needs of any relatives again where usually the woman’s pay suffers. After time off for a while eg parental leave coming back into the workforce after a few years off many women take lower paid / lesser skilled roles / or just part time work to fit arpund childcare than previously held because somehow being out of the workforce a couple of years makes you magically loose all that knowledge and skills you’ve previously gained.
Women are generally in society not allowed to be as assertive as males, you can be labelled “bossy” or seen as “nagging” or just “she must be on the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this rag” (yep I’ve heard that one!). A lot of this depends on the way a company handles complaints and discrimination but it’s not unusual for women in the workplace to be assigned general admin / teasmaid duties / cleaning as part of their role in male dominated workplaces. I’ve been walking through the showroom on my way to another area, and despite all the sales staff standing around attending to a customer, the customer turns to me and says “can you put the kettle on love?” Why did you not ask anyone else, I was senior management but female = teasmaid and most of the time we just smile and let it slide rather than cause conflict in the workplace.
It’s not as bad as it was but it did feel at times like having to work twice as hard to prove yourself in the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this workplace. When you take the ingrained societal roles into account and the fact women tend to be the ones to take career gaps or part time work to care for others it’s why generally women don’t have the same career trajectory as men in general. Women also generally retire with a smaller pension pot because those gaps in a career to care for others have a major impact on a woman’s pension pot. I’ve never personally met anyone or have worked in a job where I get paid more than my women coworkers. I’m skeptical that this is actually a thing. It sounds extremely illegal. But women do have to take off work for years sometimes to focus on parenthood. The father could step into this role, but men don’t often seem built for it the way women are. besides what has been pointed out alrdy (women working in lower paid sectors, disproportionate high part time working rates due to having to burden unpaid family and household work) – there is also a certain percentage of gender pay gap that can not be accounted for by systemic factors. this pay gap results in women of identical qualification, work experience and position still earning less than their male counterparts and can mostly be traced back to opaque pay structures in companies and arbitrarily paying women less. that is exactly why TALKING about pay with ur colleagues can be important.
Anyone who says the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this whole gap can be explained by number of hours worked or profession is misinformed or lying. Plenty of studies have accounted for hours worked and job type. My husband can job- hop.. I am pretty much stuck where I am. My job pays well enough, but I could do better. But it is near my kids’ schools and gives me a lot of PTO. My son will never be independent enough to where he can go to school on his own or look after himself after school. My husband could be the one to look after him if it worked out that way, but it worked out the way it did. And generally, women tend to be the ones to look after kids and take care of the household. Once you normalize for working hours, experience, grade, job position, diploma, you discover there no significant wage gap. There is but it is like below 5%. Make no mistakes, there still some place where women are not considered as equal to men and that’s an issue. But this is not the main driver of the wage gap.
And on the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this opposite today in many place there a form of positive segregation, so women have it easier than men. This is basically women trying to prefer women when they hire and promote. But this is not enough to fix that women work less hours, have shorter career and work in fields that pay less. Globally women don’t have the same priorities as men. IMHO, Patriarchal Religion is used to control women and keep them out of politics. Women get less money for the same job. We need more folks to demand Equal Rights for Humans! It’s old stats. If you look at men and women aged 24-40 you’ll see that women dominate. Both in education and earnings. There’s no issue with women earning less right now since we’re headed the opposite way. A focus should be to get more men educated, but we won’t see that happen until a while from now. Just wait a couple decades though. It’s not women always choosing to leave to care for families it’s women are expected to. Also, when you have kids less opportunities are offered to you as a woman, I’ve had male friends tell me how they choose not to hire women who have kids because “they know where their priorities lie”. Why do men not prioritize their families? Because it’s expected women will step in. In my job, men who have less experience than me and are in positions below mine make more than I do. The gap is there even if you don’t see it. It’s a myth perpetuated by the media. Calling it a gap suggests there’s some chicanery involved… there isn’t. The highest paying jobs with the most work hours are typically jobs women don’t take.
There was a time when women’s main job was home life, and her outside job was just for a little extra. Because she didn’t support the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this family, she was seen as needing less money, therefore paid less. Studies have shown it’s mostly a combo of the “motherhood penalty” and “fatherhood bonus”. Single men and women without children tend to earn the same for the same role. Mothers are assumed to be distracted at work and less focused on work (which isn’t wrong, kids being sick, having to leave at a certain time to pick them up). What’s odd is men are still assumed to be the main providers and therefore when they have kids their wages increase (in the idea that the company needs to do this to keep them). There’s no bias that the guys will be distracted by kids stuff or have to leave early to pick up their kids, but modern fathers do. If it was “fair” I guess both mothers and fathers would earn less than childless employees, but instead moms earn less and dads earn more.
Because they have babies and are out of work, because babies are attached to the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this mom. Luckily technology is improving so a mother will eventually never have to raise another baby again. The gender pay gap largely isn’t about women getting paid less for the same job. Historically women have earned less than men on average, largely because they take time out of their career to have children. This has meant either that they lose out on career progression opportunities because they are away on maternity leave, or they are denied opportunities by management that believe she won’t be suitable for the job because she will – at some point in the future – take maternity leave or leave all together to have children, and so isn’t suitable for the job (even if she had no intention of having children).
There is also of course a history of misogyny in hiring practices; the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this men in hiring positions (who maybe got there jobs when women typically didn’t have jobs at all), maintained beliefs that women weren’t capable of certain roles and so didn’t hire them, meaning the job pool was limited for women for a long time (and still is in some parts, as it is for men too sometimes). And adding to that, the roles that women were typically expected to work (eg nursing) were just lower paid, maybe from a history of expecting men to be the breadwinners and thus “she has a husband therefore doesn’t need to be paid much, women’s jobs are just to keep them busy, not to support a family” sort of mentality. For example, women in their 20s are now typically earning more than men in their 20s. People are having kids later now, many women are actively choosing to have kids later (or not at all) so that they can have these career opportunities. But women later in their career are earning less than men in the same age bracket, because they had children earlier in their lives and thus sacrificed their careers to have those children. Will those women now in their 20s continue that pattern of earning more than men? Probably not unless we adapt child care responsibilities so that both parents take time off to raise their kids, rather than just the women. Both women and men need to be entitled to paid time off to raise their kids, and there needs to be a cultural shift to see raising children as a responsibility of both parents (something we’ve made great progress towards, but there’s still work to be done).
Hers how you debunk it quick. Most people that believe this tend to politically be the I love gurls shirt in addition I really love this same who think capitalism is evil and will always do anything to prioritize profits. If we accept the latter as fact, why wouldn’t big companies only hire women so they can cut costs by nearly 1/4 and have identical labor? I am a woman and I make the same (and sometimes more) than men in my field. I haven’t taken months or years away for maternity or family leave. People who choose to take these long breaks can’t expect to make the same as others who are there every day. Explained has a really good episode on it on netflix. It is more complicated than discrimination, it involves how motherhood halts women’s careers among other things The true answer is bad math. Since the education system in America (where it seems to be the only place with a so called wage gap) is so shitty people are unable to properly average wage vs job while take into account time worked. In short a bunch of really stupid people are pushing bullshit for cheap karma.
