More paras seem like reasonable solutions. Paras don’t need the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this credentials that teachers do, so you don’t increase the demand for teachers I used to think this was the solution, until I was given a para who tried to give the kids answers on tests and just sat in one spot all day. She was supposed to rotate to the other content teachers in the grade level and would not, even after meetings with admin. The following year my para showed up to work maybe 2-3 days per week, no call no show. Still happened after being written up. She also kept giving kids answers on tests, exit tickets, and wrote answers for essays prompts for kids to copy. When she wasn’t giving kids answers instead of helping them come to their own answers, she was answering questions in class as if she was the student. That was all when she was awake. Yes, she slept in classrooms sitting up. It got so bad that the kids would try to wake her up and she continued to sleep. This behavior continued after multiple admin meetings. I just want a para who does their job.
I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt: A Provocative Statement in Modern Fashion
I agree with what you’ve said. I get a feeling what I’m about to say may be some of the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this 20 other suggestions. To continue your list. So, a hell of a lot more money would be great because it could help with hiring two teachers to a room. More money is really the answer, unfortunately. It just has to be spent properly. Here are some of the thingsive thought about in the past… 3. Increase teacher salary. If we got paid well. It would probably encourage others to pursue the field and make it competitive. The conditions are bad, and a serious salary bump would make it easier to swallow for many of us and, again, open the door for more hires. 4.1 To help curb learning loss and also justify the pay increase. Modify the calendar year so that students don’t have the long summer break. Break it up into some additional 2- or 3-week breaks. Let’s look at some of the calendars that other countries use and model it from that. 4.2 This would also help parents. The long summer break can make it difficult for people because they have to find childcare. We’re not supposed to be babysitters, so the modified school year would continue their education and help parents so they don’t have to take time off or drastically change their routine for the summer break. Not everyone can afford child care or have family that can watch their kids.
5. Continuing on the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this money front, if we could get enough staff at schools (2 teachers per room) and adequate materials (desks, books, supplies etc.) we could bring schools up instead of having people going for vouchers to get into schools theyre not zoned for. Politicians talk about school choice this and that. How about we bring all the schools up so school choice isn’t sought after as much? 6. More money for everyone. We need living wages. Poverty hurts so many. If everyone had more financial stability, it would help a lot. I’m not an economist, I’m sure there’s all kinds of craziness there and how that would cause inflation or whatever. At the end of the day, if more people had food in their bellies and a roof over their head, mental health would improve and can help with behavior. Now, if a person lives beyond their means, that’s where a different problem arises. Anyway.

7. A four day school week for kids. Teachers could have their Fridays to catch up on grades and parent contacts if they need to or just have a 3 day weekend. I should just say Three day weekends for everyone. The four day work week seems to be a pretty good idea across the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this board. This point could also be counted as 4.3 OK, sorry for going on a rant. I’m not saying it would be easy to implement everything I wrote here. But, I think they’re the things that could help us all. Not just teachers, but society My state has lots of school going to a four day week. The day has to be extended so much that for rural areas, busses on long routes will be out until almost 7:00 pm. Elementary children are showing more behaviors, and nap time is illegal here. Extra recess can’t be done because it doesn’t count as face-to-face instruction time, and it encroaches on teacher prep time. When you look at it, the four day school week is more beneficial to teachers and their own children because of the day off to make appointments. It’s being used as a teacher recruitment tool, and the kids are not seeing much benefit because of the extended day. I remember going to high school in a building without air conditioning. If the dress code is May and September was anything to go by, year round school would have just had swimming suits and axe body spray as summer attire.
At my site we have small class sizes. It works. I can have conservations with each one of them to see what they have learned. I strongly agree. When my district opened in the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this September after Covid started, classes were split into a morning or afternoon session, with about 12 kids in each. The children were so much calmer and got a lot of individual attention. Another teacher would mean that sick and vacation days would be less disruptive since they would effectively be in charge while the sub is the second pair of hands and eyes. My school got a grant for added co-teachers right after Covid. Having another person in the classroom to help divide and conquer classes, especially needy ones, has been absolutely wonderful.
This is my number one too, and miles above any further suggestions. It is just too many bodies in a room to accomplish anything real, the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this conversation is pointless because nothing else can be effective with a 1:30 ratio. It just can’t. And any other positive changes that happen in the early years will be erased when the chaos of 1:30 comes into play. Everyone’s cortisol is always at a peak and no one can thrive in those conditions. I personally think volunteers are great. We have a parent volunteer at my placement and it’s awesome when she can come in. We had the PTA ask for parent volunteers. But since it is volunteering, people would regularly no-show or cancel last minute for assignments. So now the teacher is scrambling. There is no consistency, and things are forced to change last minute. It actually makes it worse. You’d like to think people would show up, but this has blown up so much in our faces. This entirely, I’ve got 31 students in one class that are “better” behavior wise but a significant part of my time is spent on classroom management while in my 21 student class with students that have more behavior issues I actually am able to get more done academically. Smaller class sizes create the best learning environment and 10-15 is the perfect class size imo.
That allows for proper application of different academic levels for kids that need to be brought up to level, kids that are at level, and kids that are beyond and way beyond. Having all of those abilities together in a class is hell The earliest intervention—At the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this hospital, gift new mothers with tools and knowledge of how to raise readers. I’m thinking not only books, but quick instruction sheets for songs and games to play during early development. Maybe even something like a yearly subscription box for birth through 5 years. Public service announcements about the neurological effects of screen time on young children—if we can do it for other vices, we can do it for this. Community-based parenting classes. Teach people how to set limits and encourage independence in their children.
Better funding for community centers in general—give families and teens things to do and places to go that don’t cost an arm and a leg. Smaller class sizes and additional paraprofessional support in every classroom—and pay paras better. It should be a job that is a step above working back of house at a restaurant and offer full time hours and benefits. All of these things cost money, of course. However, they also create jobs, and I think it would be worth it to exchange some defense budget to have an educated populace. If theres a way to know..like red flags that a child will struggle to learn how to read, guidance for parents with that as well. My local health department sends out mailers to parents every few months up to age 2, then every 6 months to age 5. They talk about health and development at each age and how important it is to talk to, play with, and set boundaries with kids. As well as the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this importance of reading to them, getting physical activity, and limiting screens. My Pediatrician’s office sees a lot of low income/Medicaid patients and they give an age-appropriate book to every kid at each of their checkups. Just a quick comment with a suggestion about your first point, all new parents instead of all new mothers would more appropriate here I think. Some children have two fathers for example, or if there are two parents of opposite genders both should have information on raising readers (and children in general). I would actually go several steps further and have NO technology for students outside of a dedicated IT/tech lesson. No chrome books, no tablets, nothing. Pen and paper should be the standard for lessons and students should be expected to learn how to take notes/complete written work to a good standard. Even things which are standard like calculators should only be used after students have demonstrated basic competency with maths operations.
Then when you do introduce technology, make sure it’s desktop PCs first so that they actually learn how to do basic things like saving a file and then finding it again or typing without being glacially slow. I’d also add to this bringing back memorizing things. Things like times tables, basic poems or songs, dates and places of prominent historical events and the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this like are key to their subject area and if you don’t know them then you’re likely to struggle with more complex things. Exactly. We were not allowed to use calculators aside from the very few lessons until I was in algebra two. So all through elementary and middle school, we only use calculators a handful of times. I don’t think any of our primary school maths classes used calculators more than an absolute handful of times and that was more towards year 5-6 (so ages 9-11). Before that it wasn’t a thing.
I even remember as I was preparing for my GCSE ages 15-16 my maths teacher (who was a good teacher) made an active point to show us that you could do even the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this calculator portion of the maths papers without it. Yes, things like trigonometry were a nuisance that took longer to do, but it was still doable. YES. Memorization somehow “fell out of fashion” and now nobody can memorize anything or focus on anything. Combined with the technology it’s a disaster. Fuckin A. I was a sophomore when my school district got laptops for all the students in middle and high school, and tablets for elementary. Everyone’s grades fell. Now I’m a substitute and every time I fill a vacancy for a school and get to set my own lessons, my students have to do it all on paper. Notes? Paper and pencil/pen. Quizzes and tests? Paper. It’s an ELA class? Everyone in the class reads a page out loud every class period as we go through the book together. It’s a foreign language class? Every time we get new vocab you have to make flash cards for a grade. I was a parent volunteer in my daughter’s 5th grade class and my biggest feedback for the principal was to retrain their staff on iPads or ban the lessons.
Everyone had jailbroken tablets and were bypassing settings. Like kids configured their tablet to only give remedial first grade lessons so that they could move on to free time … where they googled adult content on devices jailbroke to bypass filters. Yessssss. My students can’t have cell phones but are on chromebooks all day. All the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this do is try to do other things or find ways to “hack” programs we use. They aren’t learning anything fully. When I was in high school, if they saw or heard a phone, that shit was gone until your parents picked it up-no exceptions. Older Gen Z here. That was a policy still when I was in high school. I think they stopped enforcing it as strictly by the time I was in senior year because we’d had so many lockdowns/evacuations (there was like an average of a bomb threat per week for a month or two in junior year) and the parents wanted to have the ability to communicate with their kids.
They were also lenient on the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this policy for kids who had to get home on their own. It was a “I’ll hold it until the end of day” not until their parents could come grab it. The “I’ll hold it till the end of the day” makes sense (albeit maybe with a parental notification that their kid was a little shit and let their phone go off). I agree, or even just holding it til the end of class. I think requiring a parent to come pick it up (at least on a first offense) isn’t great because for some kids that could mean their phone is held for longer if their parents can’t get the time off to come in. Sure, you could say that that’ll teach them not to do it, but it also means you’re inadvertently punishing some kids more than others for the same offense. If it’s a repeat offender then I think it could make sense to require the parent to pick it up because at that point it makes sense to escalate.
Abandon pacing! I have a PhD in history and the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this pace with which I have to teach is ludicrous. 12 class periods for the entirety of the Renaissance (one of my dissertation fields) is obscene. There’s no time to digest anything and really get into the really interesting material. Zero technology, ever. Technology is designed to be addictive, have you ever tried to keep an addict’s attention? Let kids be bored! There’s so much research on how boredom is imperative for cognitive development and yet half my freshman are out 2-3 times a week with their various clubs and competitions, and then we wonder why they can’t sit still. Parents, admin, must understand that failure is part of the learning process. The drive for perfection means 90% of students don’t actually learn anything because we don’t allow them to make mistakes and correct them because god forbid it affects their GPA for college.
We must deploy the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this entirety of America’s nuclear arsena upon the college board. No institution has done more to transform American education into an industrial conveyor belt instead of the hollistic process it’s meant to be, I hate them. I agree with that history pacing is insane but the renaissance probably isn’t the best example. Since world history is more a fairly high level overview of important stuff. And 3 weeks is a pretty decent amount of time to spend on a single time period. I used that period as an example I can speak of with authority. I promise you I could do a whole year on the Renaissance even with a class that meets every day of the week like AP World Class. Moreover, everyone I know from grad school, from ancient to modern historians, could do the same for their subject matter. Reducing the entirety of the Renaissance to a 3 week chunk robs it of everything, which is true of every other period covered by World/Euro history courses. The overall point was there’s no mastery, no time for writing, no time to fully embrace the nuances of any time period or people. I cannot tell you how many times I had students in college tell me they would have liked history more if they learned all this “other stuff” that gets ripped out of our curricula as k-12 teachers.
Go back to basics. Go back to skill-and-drill, go back to repetition, go back to building blocks of roots etc that help kids access more language. As a 9th grade English teacher, I’m having to review nouns v verbs. Seriously. How am I supposed to teach the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this abstract concept of extended metaphors if they’re not comprehending larger ideas as nouns being compared in complex ways to other nouns?? Like?? I’m at a HiGh ExPeCtAtIoNs charter school that wants kids thinking in highly critical ways and they can’t even express their (sometimes brilliant) thoughts in writing bc they don’t write. So go back to the things they missed not doing shit online, even if it means pausing new content. I legit gave spelling/handwriting practice hw. I know busy work type hw is scoffed at these days, but they can’t spell so it’s my job to stop and get them on a basic level in order to write complex thoughts.
I’m tired of being told to spiral in skills and literally just things you need to know when they’re so behind on just basic learning habits/skills. It’s a lot on a teacher to be responsive that way bc it means changing a lot of curriculum a lot of the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this time, but that’s how I try to combat the massive learning/social/emotional development stunting during online learning. It’s interesting that you’re still having to review basic grammar, because I work in an elementary school and have a third grader. This year he has learned common & proper noun, helping & action verb, adjective, and a few other grammar things. If they’re starting to learn it this early, but haven’t actually learned it by the time they’re in high school, then what is going on? Do you think it indicates that we start introducing stuff too soon, and it’s not developmentally appropriate, so it’s just totally going over most of their heads? I work in a sixth grade math classroom and I know that in third grade, they spend a huge chunk of the year practicing basic multiplication and division facts, until they have them memorized. My son comes home with flash cards that he has to practice every day and his teacher tests the kids on them twice a week. When they pass a set, they move on to the next number. Not everybody is finished with all the facts even by this point in the year; everybody moves at their own speed. But most of the students, by the end of the year, have at least finished the multiplication facts. But yet my sixth graders don’t all know their facts, even though most of them went to our school in third grade, with our old-school third grade teachers who focus on basics. They still sit there, skip counting on their fingers. It’s mind-boggling.
I’m also a 9th grade ELA teacher and I think the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this answer is that they’re taught the basics in 3rd/4th grade but then those basics aren’t revisited or reinforced. The way our current state standards read, each grade introduces a new grammatical concept (9th is focused on properly integrating colons and semicolons) but when the push is to teach and focus on “Priority” standards (the standards most commonly seen on state testing) its hard to fit in dedicated grammar lessons. I could try assigning it as homework, but homework is also being pushed a lot and a lot of kids don’t do it. If I want them to actually learn it, I have to dedicate class time to it. I remember ninth grade English, we spent 3/4 of the year learning grammar, and the last quarter was literature studies, poetry and things like that. we had a notebook and had to take notes and then we had exercises we practiced in class and then daily homework from the textbook. Same thing in 11th grade, from the same teacher. We advanced to the next level of grammar, new textbook, same format. Take notes in class, do practice exercises, do daily homework. I remember having to write out charts of all the English verb conjugations, a different verb every day.
NONE of that is in curricula these days. “ThEy’Ll Be AbLe To HeAr CoRrEcT eNgLiSh AnD HaVe GoOd GrAmMeR nAtUrAlLy” headasses. I’m telling you, so many things that seemed unnecessary while we were growing up, actually laid strong foundations for accessing more information (computer classes, sentence formation, times tables, fucking handwriting lessons). Kids don’t have that these days and are just pushed thru and end up in high school not being able to write a legible, logical paragraph using original analysis. It just…ugh I could go on and on. It’s rough out here. Yeah, it’s changed a lot. I teach at the I came in like a butterball funny Turkey Disco Thanksgiving shirt but in fact I love this same school I graduated from. I remember having about 2-3 grammar lessons a week mixed in with novel activities. Mostly worksheets and diagramming sentences. I talked with my department head about it (who was also my senior English teacher) and she said that my class of students were one of the last few that had grammar as a priority standard. The state wants us to focus on making sure students know how to identify rhetoric in informational texts and how to effectively explain the use of literary devices in novels through citing specific, relevant quotes.
