It’s so awesome you’re exposing your son to so much stimulation before and outside of school. My 9th graders were online for most of 5th grade and all of 6th grade. Not only is this such a critical socialization age w peers, it’s also the prime time to help kids be actual learners and not passive students. But they didn’t do S H I T online during that time so they just lost sooo much straight up information to actually access these more complex subjects. Pair all that w the below ground level expectations in middle school after we came back on campus, atp these kids are just – I’m sorry – dumb. And it’s really not their fault! But the ability to learn and retain information is severely stunted by the lack of foundational knowledge and skills.

I think having mixed aged classed would help, too. The class should be based on the level of the material, not the age of the child. Ofc, this would mean you might have a kid going to a “4th grade” class for reading and a “2nd grade” class for math. But plenty of kids have asynchronous development. Because if it’s not teachers driving this change we’re going to get short-sighted politicians or parents with an agenda shaping the discussion. It doesn’t have to be all of us, but it does have to be us. First of all end programs like no child left behind. Second end school funding being tied to the number of students in seats. In all seriousness, not being afraid to hold students back who did not measure up. So anyways—I think money being funneled into schools would be a start. However, I think what we are seeing in education is more of a societal issue. More division in our country, poverty, social climate, etc. Teachers can’t change that. Society has to change. I can tell very quickly if a child has parents that value their education and have taught them basic manners and how to regulate their behaviors. Easy. Focus on making EVERYTHING developmentally appropriate. For example, In kindergarten you learn how school works, how to socialize, letters, numbers, how to cut, how to raise your hand, walk in a line.
