Been trying to get him evaluated for literally anything for months now, but we don’t have a school psychologist (no one applied) I teach a lot of Hispanic kids, we were talking about the history of Latin America and the civil war in El Salvador and the use of child soldiers. One El Salvadoran girl absent mindedly said to me “my dad was a child soldier” and it struck me how lucky I am to live in a place where that wasn’t a possibility. Another girl told me she was berated by her parents for not running back into the school during an active shooter situation to find her younger siblings. They were blaming her for not taking care of them even though they ended up (relatively) fine. Yet another girl asked me if she could tell me the “funny version” of getting shot during the same incident. I said ok, and she proceedes to act out the process of getting shot in the head, complete with falling to the ground and crawling around on the floor. Meanwhile I’m giving a 100 yard stare because I was also there and don’t remember it being funny, but whatever. She never had a chance to talk through and process what happened like my other students did, since she was in the hospital.
One of my more rambunctious 8th graders piped up something to this effect…“Miss- I respect you WAY more than I respect my mama. She spends all my dad’s money on Starbucks and spends all of her time on her damn phone. I hate Facebook. She won’t even look at me”. So in one of my forays into Kinderland, there was one little girl who stuck to me like glue. As we’re having a private conversation away from everybody else, as she’s clinging to my arm with her head rested against my bicep, she unexpectedly blurted out that there’s only her and Mommy at home.
