We get that for like 1 or 2 weeks a year and it’s literal hell on Earth. I only survive it by sitting in front of a fan all day. For the record, my Deutsch freund (or freundin) – I grew up in Adelaide with dry heat and regular over 38C, even mid 40C waves in summer. But having lived in much more moderate Melbourne for 20 years now, 30C is now the temp that my arse only leaves the house after dusk!!! My guess: hypothermia is due to the fact that Aussie houses are not insulated properly if at all. Most Aussie houses would not be permitted under the Swedish building code. Oh god, it’s easy to deal with the cold in New York because the buildings are well insulated and everyone has the right clothing. 20 degrees F? No problem. It is SO COLD inside a house in Southern California when it’s 50 degrees out. Then when you go outside you already have a chill in your bones. Nah dude. Absolutely no one in Australia would get in trouble due to housing insulation (no one really lives in actual Alpine regions, except those working at resorts and very small handful of others).

As most of Australia don’t require double insoulution glass, it’s expensive and often seen as overkill. My own house has “alpine glass” a slightly thicker single glass similar to commercial shops. Bushfire is the primary concern when building so building codes focus on fire protection rather than insoulution
