They’ll thamk you for it in about 30yrs!! I was drastically overcharged by my parents. My part time job while I was in college (£3.25 per hour, 16 hours a week) had my parents charging me £20, so over a third of what I was earning. It made it really hard to do any sort of socialising and I later found out about my parents still getting child benefit which was about £60 per month, so on average I was giving them maybe £120-140 per month. Granted, eating and heating would have cost them a few quid a month but in 2006/7 it wouldn’t have been quite that much. I applied for a couple of university’s but I wasn’t eligible for any financial assistance as my parents earned too much. There’s student loans of course but even back then it was pretty much generally accepted that you’d need help from the bank of mum and dad. I decided I would work alongside studying but then I was told I’d still have to pay keep if I wanted to keep my room, not having the funds to do uni and keep my room at home which I needed for all of my stuff which I wasn’t planning on taking to uni I ended up not accepting the offer from my first choice and decided to get full time work and concentrate on passing my driving test, maybe going to uni in a couple of years once I had some money behind me to help. That’s when I get hit with a big increase in keep, it would now be 50% of my takehome but generously capped at £400. I was working in a pub at the time and taking home maybe £700-800 per month, so losing half of what I’d earned and then paying for driving lessons on top left me with basically nothing, certainly not enough to do holidays with mates or go on nights out.
