Come to Australia and New Zealand, you won’t get any hassles although it’s very expensive here. I was aware of the reputation but find most places I’ve travelled are no where near as bad as there rep. I have otherwise had an incredible time here and travelled to a whole range of different areas, the food has been delicious, I’ve seen some incredible and breathtaking sites, rode scooters through the mountains, dipped in the ganga, swam in the ocean, held monkeys and seen elephants, the food has been so delicious (so very much better than English indian food) no regrets on coming to India, just slightly worn down from getting hit on at so many different angles it hasn’t been unsafe just uncomfortable
I am a solo traveller from US. I lived in India for seven years. In India, do not talk to men you haven’t been introduced to unless they are your driver/waiter. Go to a clothing store TODAY and buy a ready made salwar kameez. Your western clothes draw attention to you immediately and mark you as a degenerate western tourist. You CAN travel safely in India, but there are certain rules( which arent written down) I met a French girl who was traveling through Sri Lanka/India for some 9 months. In Cambodia, you’ll just have to worry about other travelers and expats. Local guys may look, but they’re unlikely to hit on you. I didn’t go solo but I found Mumbai not bad at all. My gf has a friend that traveled on vacation to Istanbul and was drugged and gang raped. Some other cultures do not value or respect women’s autonomy as much. Please be careful depending on where you are traveling and maybe avoid going solo to such countries. Thailand I was followed a couple times by other farangs and not approached but it always happened when I was talking on my phone on the street and not paying attention to my surroundings just gabbing away, Vietnam mostly just stared/gawked at, random dudes stopping on their scooters wanting to give me a ride and a grab driver who kept google translating that I was pretty instead of watching the road on the way to airport and I felt like I needed to “be nice”, and Malaysia where it was alot of stares and a false sense of security from the guards at the property I was staying at as I was a little anxious one might abuse his power, and one random brief stalking situation. Malaysia made me the most uneasiest due to the conservative/predominantly Muslim area I was in and that most the women were in hijab and either in a group of other women or with their husband/family, me being the only solo Westerner everywhere I went. All this to say, please be safe wherever you go and don’t make yourself an easy target or let your guard down. Also I cant believe your bf left before India honestly, no offense.

But SE Asia has a ton of single backpacker dudes, so they’ll still hit on you. Just chalk it up to the fact that you are pretty and it’s part of it. Just politely decline and mention you have a bf. That should be enough for them to take a hint. Also if someone hits on you in a respectful way, take it as a compliment. Dudes are just trying and it can be tough out there to find a nice girl. If they are rude or too forward, that’s different.

I found the Philippines and Sri Lanka to be the worst, everywhere else I got used to. I am a woman, tall, quite pale and have freckles and lighter hair, so the opposite of most people from SEA. I also got quite a few selfie requests, but those are better than people randomly taking pictures without your consent. The one thing I remember mostly though was that a lot of the men I spoke to said they had similar experiences, so I don’t think it was always being hit on so much as being different and people being interested in someone who looked different to what they were used to. It was obviously more common in more remote places. But by then you might be asking the opposite or shaming men for hitting on younger “impressionable innocent” women

For Sri Lanka – I’m not sure what happened but this season (in the south), there has been an increased of safety issues pertaining to non-local women. Friends, people I met and many nomads had stated so in a nomad group I am in. Many have lived here for years (expats or married to a Sri Lankans), or have returned every season for the past 2 to 8 years. Many stated that they always felt safe but this is the first year they felt they had to be cautious. This was also the first year where many of them did experience something significant/concerning pertaining to safety/sexual harassment.

It’s been an interesting transition into being Ma’am and then madam’ed and being mostly invisible to people. I think I’m also hanging out in areas that are more quiet, not really doing nightlife or hanging out at a hostel.

I am 23f and do not go out in the party scene often but whenever I did specifically on the islands or just in the south in general all the tourist drunk boys were so annoying and creepy I went to Vietnam and Cambodia alone. I had a tour guide part of the time but I had absolutely no issues that I can recall. The people there were lovely.

Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos will be though. I didn’t get hit on a lot at all and felt very safe. Granted, I wasn’t in the Chicago Cubs I can do all things through christ who strengthens me shirt But I will love this most isolated places there (but also not only the major cities/tourist destinations either) but I can really recommend those countries for safe female solo travel. Haven’t been to Cambodia or the Phillipines so can’t speak from experience but what I heard it seems great to solo travel. Srinlanka on the other hand seemed to have some cat calling issues but probably not as bad as India. India is notoriously bad for it You’re going to be fine in Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines, that’s based on my experience. In the Philippines though, they would stare at you or sometimes ask for a picture if you’re blonde with blue eyes. Sometimes, they would also just like to talk to you to practice english. Has anybody told you before you travel that a pretty white woman shall not travel alone? You will always experience getting hit on so lets stop the naivete

One technique I’ve found to help is to be more ugly Me and my partner have just spent two months in India and the comments and steers she got was next level (and that was even with me by her side). Haven’t experienced anything nearly as bad in other countries. We’ve been to Sri Lanka in the past too and from memory it was fine there. Sounds like you didn’t do your research well enough. Not sure why a female would travel alone to India for an extended period of time. The mistake, sadly, is yours. India is like that. You’ll be absolutely fine in Thailand, etc. i wouldn’t travel India as a woman alone. Too much hassle, as you’ve unfortunately experienced. Nothing dramatically changed (too incompetent to self promo in social media and milk it), back to 9-5 office job living life but boy I have seen a fair amount of world and that’s what I want! I used to travel a lot in my 20s and of course it was awesome and I could say it made me who I am today but it also came with a negative side effect so to speak: an unquenchable thirst for travelling and seeing the world. Now that I’m in my mid 30s with a kid, dog, station wagon and a mortgage it bugs me almost everyday that I “have to” live this life which by all means is amazing and I can’t travel as much as I want. I feel bad cos I have good life and family yet I’m never mentally completely present cos I’m thinking of going somewhere or planning some ridiculous travel itineraries which most likely will never even come true. Especially after the birth of my first child this really bothered me but now that the world has opened again after COVID-19 and travelling is possible again it’s getting better. Hang in there. The same happened to me. Travel on a strict budget now when you can. When I got order 50+ I was able to start traveling more again. Headed to Ecuador and the Galapagos in May.

I worked in Thailand in my 20s for two years with no college degree as an English teacher and tutor. I also worked for an import/export agency answering emails from overseas clients, and for a bit I wrote/edited for a local tourist magazine. Basically wherever a native English speaker would be useful. In Prague, I worked as a handyman, a “fixer” for American restauranteurs and eventually when my language skills got better as a translator. I also worked in a scooter shop as a mechanic. For five years in my 20s I basically pingã-ponged around the world doing whatever I could to survive, and I would not trade those years for anything.
