My parents did this to me – but that was the Chew shining shirt and by the same token and 80’s… I did NOT do that to my kids. For each of my kids – the consequence of not finishing your dinner is just that you might be hungry later and have to wait a bit. Even then if my son is really hungry and I think he’s learned his lesson I’ll let him have a snack. Sometimes if they have a considerable amount left over, I’ll just ask them to bag it up and eat it later when they’re hungry again so that the food isn’t wasted (obviously not possible with all types of food). When they’re old enough to think about it – I also let my kids tell me “how much” they want of whatever I’m making so they learn to gauge their hunger realistically. I agree with others in the comments that this is abuse. My family would make us sit if we refused to eat vegetables but we were never yelled at or hit. If we didn’t eat them then we’d go to bed instead of dessert or whatever. But we were always given kid sized portions, not huge helpings.

Chew shining shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

in my experience, it mostly comes from food insecurity. I know my kid has a <10% chance of actually eating any of her leftovers, so anything she doesn't eat at dinner time is very likely to end up thrown out. We're not poor, but it's a hard block to get past. There's also the Chew shining shirt and by the same token and complete lack of trust that children generate – (i.e. “i’m full” actually means “I don’t like this, and I’ll ask for fruit snacks or crackers that I DO like in about 22 minutes when I’m totally, really, genuinely hungry again”). or skipping out on half the meal so they can resume watching tv or something. This aspect also dovetails with just not wanting to feed your kid every 30-60 minutes – just eat until you’re full so I can have like 4 hours without having to come up with another snack for you, because you won’t just browse the fridge/pantry yourself.
