There was another mentally ill homeless guy who hurt someone on the subway and the news interviewed his family after. They were like “he was offered treatment multiple times but he always declined it… how can someone who sees things that aren’t there make that decision for themselves?” Yes. Often the family is powerless to stop them and some of these people live on the street because they have been violent to family members before or have frequently stolen or damaged their family’s property to an extreme degree. This is exactly why the homeless crisis and mental health are such a complicated issue. I hear people say things like it isn’t right to institutionalize people against there wishes, but I’m sorry we can’t allow for this in society. We must have systems in place to handle mentally unstable individuals who are refusing to medicate and accept help. They need to be institutionalized and they need to be medicated until they are at a point where they can be trusted to make decisions for themselves. It’s such a touchy subject and currently I don’t trust our leaders to create the systems in the most ethical way. No easy answer.
