I definitely agree you should go in with phonics. With your niece specifically, since she’s reached a point of frustration, I would try framing it to her as an alternate strategy that might be easier. Don’t say “right” or “wrong”, just say you’re providing an option that can help her if she wants it. Some people scoff at magazines and comics but my philosophy is that if there are words and she’s reading them then I’m happy. We’re starting a library routine today actually! I told her she can pick ANYTHING she wants to read about, so I’m hoping that entices her to give it a try An absolutely great idea!
